The old 7A cranks are different but not in measurements...

    7A crankshaft is 20kg

Some years ago Roger Galvin and I reshelled an ur-quattro's big ends.

Although we are ABSOLUTELY certain the engine had not been messed with since it left the factory, the big ends were undersize and the shells correspondingly marked.

I haven't trusted a crank since. No matter where it comes from - even if it's out of a box - measure it.

There was a post about this years back. Aren't there also two types of cranks with the same bearing sizes. One is cast the other is forged? Both should be fine providing you get the right one

jogi: could the crank been machined? That may be the case. The blocks are all the same and I find it hard to believe that vag changed crankshaft size for just one model with the same base design with the engine and head and all other components surrounding it.. but then again, vag is vag

I believe all of the 20v engines, including the 7a, are the same crank. The Wx/Wr in the urq and the MC engines have different cranks with the difference being the big end journals. The mains are the same across the board. I am running a 7a crank in an MC block right now.

When my original crank bent, the first replacement I got which came from a 20vt engine definitely had the wrong sized big end journals. I'm not sure what engine it came from (maybe a ur engine - are these different?) but I still have that particular crank in my garage as it could not be used. The 2nd one I got was fine and is still in use now. It may be an unlikely occurence to get one that doesn't fit, but be aware that this could happen!

I am not saying there aren't "versions", but I found this (below). It *might* help. (Note: the same PN is also the AAN and ADU PN).

Yes I did get caught out some years ago. AAt the time I needed a replacement 20vt crank as I had bent mine.
IIRC there are two varients of the crank. They differ in the size of the big end bearings. Can't give you any more information, but just so you are aware.
