Cheers for the question bud. You have PM. Dont really want to hijack other peoples threads and can start another if people feel it would be beneficial.

I am not shure 350 will be all you will spend with tools. And before you learn how to you should try a 1.4-1.5 bar generic and have fun with the car.For more "bar" you should started learning a little earlyer or join vems comunity. Or do not get generic 1.5 bar,go straight upper and pay for a tune.

But again,if you are determined you shoul go for it.This i how i got a repair shop full of tools, now i make my own FIA conform rollbar with my own bending tools.I am an account manager(profesionaly) not a mechanic I gaved that example not to show how splendid and good i am,just for letting you know that starting to work only a little can get you where you never have dreamed of getting at.

If you find something that is not java related let me know

    Cheers

I'm not starting totally from scratch I "think" I have the basics in my mind.

It's gaining the means not the outcome that is my pursuit

If i go to somebody trustworthy for a remap it's going top cost me £350+

If figure I can by some equipment and DIY for that and learn along the way!

You should be famiar with programing in some forms. If only hardware you are good it might not be sufficient.Soldering a 3 bar map is the small problem you can deal with.
An emulator should be a must i think,i imagine with the car running you will see some data changing and you will be abble to asume :that is rew, that is spark advance etc. Also will help to see changes in realtime not to burn bilions of eproms.
If you read some posts of PRJ about 2 month ago there is something that might get you to the right way.
I also wanted to learn this but it was to much info for me and it is not a priority(now i bought a milling machine and seems more important to take lesons from my father and make gears, caliper holders etc)

But nobody can stop you and it should not.PRJ(a case that i know from here, there are others but not seen them "growing" since i am a member here) started this way and understand it all.

    So good luck!!

The link you posted is the one i am talking about. But i saw "java" and my heart started to beat faster and i closed the topic

    started a topic DIY Remapping

    DIY Remapping

Ok this can be a touchy subject but please hear me out I am not interested the learning this art for financial gain

I have for a long time been fascinated with the workings of ecu's and electronics in general. I have a t4 transporter that, after fitting some uprated injectors needs a remap.

Having read the above excellent article by our very own Mr PRJ and many others, I would very much like to have a go at mapping this myself. I admit I'm a novice but been reading lots and have a lot experience with the physical side of electronics, just not programing.
I'm not interested in buying cloned flash tools and flashing with somebody else's software. I would like to do this from scratch and learn along the way.

This is where I am so far:

    I have downloaded tuner pro.
I have down loaded an xdf file and bin for an unrelated vehicle to have a play with it.
I have downloaded the original bin for my transporter from chip-tuners.org
I can't find an xdf file for this so may have to do the def myself. (might need help hear)

I'm quite happy with soldering so don't mind going down the manual route and socketing the ecu if necessary.

Do you think I should go down the manual route, get an eprom programmer and an emulator? If so any recommendations?

    Cheers
Working...
