    Get a gapping tool.

0.6 mm is what you want. Wider and the spark is less intense and gets "blown out". Narrower and there isn't enough spark to fire the mixture. 0.6 mm is the compromise. The Bosch F5DP0Rs came at 0.6 mm out of the box because they are the OE 20VT plug.

The NGKs are more universal and might be gapped differently than 0.6 mm out of the box.

Cheers for that Dave. So would a chipped rs2 setup need re-gapped plugs (assuming the ngk's a default gapped to 0.6mm)?

How/why to gap a spark plug

Modified engines require smaller gap settings to account for the amount of power you're putting through the engine. General rule of thumb: the more power, the smaller the gap. Our 20VT engines seem to be happiest with a gap of 0.6mm

A properly gapped spark plug is necessary for a properly functioning engine. The gap size affects the spark plug's firing temperature, which has a direct relationship to the combustion of fuel and air in the engine. Opening the gaps...

One thing I did read in the thread link that Alex provided was that the plugs could also cause lifter ticking?? Popdemonic mentioned it on the first page of the thread? I only ask as I had some lifter ticking but can't see how the plugs would cause this??

Ha! I thought I'd seen some in there! I'm going to have to find time this weekend to have a bit of a play around. Need to get her running by Xmas. I'll grab some plugs anyway even if they hang around as spares.

If you need any help installing new OEM coils give me shout. We can improve on the OEM wiring protection under the cover, and use the correct crimp terminals rather than soldering
Another option is using LS coils and keeping your 20v turbo cover
Alex, that would be much appreciated mate. When we spoke about options previously I was leaning towards the LS conversion but having looked in the engine bay I can't see where they could be located without looking out of place. It's a real dilemma as if I go away from OEM coils I'll lose the natural appearance in the engine bay which I want to avoid if possible. That said, is a coil conversion an accepted step away from pure OEM considering the cost and availability of the original coils? I would like to think so but wouldn't want that to devalue the car in any way.

Does your Rev counter ever go to zero momentarily at all when the hiccup happens ? Or do you just drive through it ?
That's good to know. I haven't really driven the car since it started happening but tbh I can't say I noticed the Rev counter doing funny things.

I used to use the same plugs as Alex. Never an issue with them. Mind you, they replaced the OEM bosch plugs which I never had an issue with either. When they were changed, I did not check the colour of the letting. I recall reading somewhere that blue (or was it black) lettering were knock off plugs and the black (or was it blue) were the real deal. Clearly my lack of knowledge is no help ref the Bosch plugs but the NGK plugs worked fine with absolutely no difference in performance whatsoever.

The reason a lot of people are running the NGKs is that the OEM Bosch F5DPOR have caused some serious issues whereby the ceramic breaks off the plug and damages pistons, heads, valve seats and turbos - not good at all. Whether these are counterfeit items that have entered the supply chain or Bosch has a problem - who knows.

The NGK a lot of people including me are running for stock-ish S2/RS2 power is the BKR7EIX.

    Have a read here:

I'm confused as much as you as to the in favour plug.I have a feeling it's the NGK Iridium for normal 230bhp tune and RS2 tune cars but would feel more confident if someone can confirm this for myself and Russ with a link Alex ? Cheers.
