Yes mate, very common caracteristic/fault.
Please don't be concerned, we know of cars that do take a hammering with this no problem.Leave a comment:

Thanx Scotty,
I wasn't too concerned about it as I never launch it away from the lights, where 1st would take a hammering, and it isn't loud anyway. Do I get the impression it's a common characteristic/fault?Leave a comment:

This is quite common, mine dose it too.
It's caused by the first gear cog being gnarled i.e slightly worn.
Not worth worying about to much, we know of boxes going on for 10's of thousands of miles with this fault, mine included. worry when it brakes completely.Leave a comment:

Sorry to hijack......
Mine produces a slight whine in 1st, completely silent in all other gears. Anything to worry about? '95 S2Avant.

They are slightly slow and ponderous, but with the clutch fully disengaged it should shift smoothly and quietly. First to second shifts are the most likely to be baulked, but that is usually when you are trying shift too fast.Leave a comment:

Old 'box oil and a knackered clutch could be causing those symptoms. These boxes require a little patience when changing but they shouldn't crunch or whine too much

Planning on changing the clutch (S2 ABY) soon and have been wondering if the gearbox needs replacing. If it's on the way out I'd rather fix it at the same time as changing the clutch.
It's just ticked over 170k miles and generally driving it just feels as though it could be smoother. As it stands gear changes have to be slow and gentle to avoid jerkyness/crunching. All gears are the same really, a bit knotchy, none in particular are worse than others. Are there any tests I could do to determine if there are any major problems with it and whether it's on the way out?
