1. Remove wheel centre cap.
2. Loosen the center bolt in the CV joint (27 mm deep socket, breaker bar, pipe extension)
3. Loosen wheel bolts
4. Jack up front and remove wheel. (Use jack stands)
5. Remove centre bolt from outer CV joint (PN 4A0407643A - needs to be replaced)
6. Clean the recesses in the "polygon" (triple square) socket head bolts holding the axle/drive shaft inner CV joint to the transaxle drive flange.
7. Remove bolts holding inner CV joint to drive flange with 10 mm triple square tool (available at many stores including SEARS):
8. Push axle towards outer CV joint to clear inner CV joint from the transaxle drive flange.**
9. Lower inner end of axle and slide axle towards the center of the car and out of hub bearing in strut.
10. Replacement of the axle is the reverse of removal. New center bolt on outer strut (PN 4A0407643A)needs to be torqued and stretch as per pdf below.
** - if that doesn't get you enough clearance, removel the bolt (Item 14 on page 2/2 of the pdf linked below) holding the strut to the ball joint on the lower control arm and pop strut off the lower control arm (use large pry bar between subframe and lower control arm). Swing strut outwards to gain necessary clearance at the drive flange (turn steering wheel as needed).
