No gear selection is possible, engine on or off.

Last time I could get 2nd so I was able to drive it to an Audi specialist about 10 miles away. They had the box out and had to take it (partially) apart to free it up. No actual repair was done (beacuse I'm a cheapskate ) as it was fine after it was un-jammed.

I think it was a bent selector fork that caused the problem... I doubt it's something I can rectify with a socket set and little knowledge of what I should be doing

Can you select any gears while the engine is off? How did you solve it last time and what work was done i.e. clutch, linkage rod, gearbox etc.

    Crap. It's happened again.

This time I have neutral and nothing else

I don't have anywhere near the money to sort it right now, unless it can be freed up while on my driveway, so I'm looking for a banger to get me to and fro work for the time being.

Right, gotcha. I need a new rod though anyway

Nooo... What I mean is use your linkage (the rod etc) and bolt to an S4 box... Just had a quick google and its seems possible. Folk have fitted ABY CGR boxes to S4s... So should work the other way round. Post up a question in a new thread maybe?

Well if I can use an S4/S6 box I need the rod that runs between the box and the gear stick too - don't know if that's different to a B4 in a C4...

Can you use an Audi S4 6 Speed if you use the S2 linkage?? I'm not sure but I expect someone else knows

It's going to be more expensive to get it reconditioned so swapping a gearbox it is!

Bad luck old chap. Someone on here may have a spare, worth comparing cost.

I think it's either going to be linkage or selector forks. Gonna be costly but at least the car isn't fecked!

Thanks but his thread says sold pending payment.

I've made some inquiries about gearboxes but ultimately I'm going to wait on the diagnosis next Wednesday. I know there's going to be a lot of labour involved in getting into the gearbox to see what's wrong but it doesn't seem likely that something catastrophic has happened
