  • Conversion to S2 5 Stud hubs

I have a 1990 Audi Coupe Quattro 20 V. This has the naturally aspirated 2309cc engine (7A). I wanted to improve the brakes.

The brake conversion I had decided upon used 314mm Audi A8 disks and Porsche Monoblock callipers. The standard car has 4 stud hubs 4 x 108mm.I did not want to mess about converting disks etc. and so decided upon changing to 5 stud hubs. I found a set of S2 5 stud hubs and hub carriers these are 5 x ( edit 112MM). This is similar to what the Americans have done to make the replica S2. The S2 was never imported into North America/ Canada. These replicas are called E/S2’s. The conversions are described on several sites on the net.

The change to 5 stud hubs meant a change of wheel as well. I have always liked the early S2 wheels (5 spoke) but the bigger brakes will not fit in them. As I found a set of Audi 100/S4 wheels and tyres at a good price at a show I took the plunge and bought them. The wheels have been painted and the tyres re-fitted.

This is the first part of my conversion story: There will be more pictures to follow.

    David.

Errm Last night after I'd been to the pub!

After extensive work with a rat tail file ( and a quick edit!) they are now 5 x 112mm !

Doug and Cees, thanks for the observation.

The hub carriers are now painted with marine primer and will be painted with 2 pack paint this evening. More pictures later.

Thanks for the shiny comment Paul. It was not for looks, it's just a friend of mine has a zinc passivate system in his garage and I can use it. It's just for protection.

Puppetman; the hubs are available second user for £130 there are other costs involved though disks, wheels and 4 more wheel studs!

Off to earn some money now!

David - you are the official 'chemical and treatments prime' on the group - with a mighty list of contacts who have toys like that.

What kind of girl could refuse lines such as -

"I have a sinc passivate system in my garage - its just for protection - would you like to see it ?".

Oh their knees would tremble with joy...

I may be sending some parts to you chemical brothers in the near future

                        Paul,
The quick answer is, most women could refuse!.

Luckily the girlfriend's father used to race Fraser Nashes and all sorts of pre war cars and so messing about with old rubbish is normal to her!

My mate steve is the man to speak to, he is very helpful and runs a business from His home. I specialise in steel fabrication and restoration of Morris Minors. I will be posting picturesoon of my 1949 bodyshell rebuild which is scary!
The most difficult part is the cleaning of the items for plating, they need to be media "sand" blasted ideally. Let me know and I will introduce you Paul

Wab, I need some Braided hoses I have all the rest, I would be interested in knowing if you supply seperately and if so how much. I was going to get them made in Stockport. Front top flexibles and rear flexible.

I'm just down in Sunny Wilmslow.

I'd do thie same job in a NewYork minute ......

If I had the access to the parts that you and others on this Forum have in the UK. But here in the States the cost alone is ungodly! We have importers of these same parts but they charge a first born just for the hubs. Everything has to be sourced on your own. And right now the exchange rate between the pound sterling or even the Euro is not desirable!
                          You guys are so lucky.

Panzerwagen - you guys in the states have it easy regards the price of most things - like houses, gasoline, food, clothes and everything else. True the exchange rate against the dollar is against you this summer - which sucks for you guys wanting Euro bits, but generally speaking Britain is a total ripoff country to live in.

Example - We brits pay over 6 quid for a gallon of gas nowadays - thats getting on for 12 dollars !
