    Hi,
I am getting a little confused here. We need to keep these front and rear hub and bearing stuff a little seperated.

    I have a USA 20V NA coupe.

I purchased 1995 hubs and hubs carrier from a guy on this forum having a breaker. I also have a extra set of struts, one front and one rear from a 20V NA coupe, so I could do fitups and setups for hubs and brakes without having to have my car half torn apart.

The size of the hub carriers and hubs(with the exception of being 5X112) are the same as my coupe. In fact, when I ordered the new bearings, I just ordered coupe 20V NA bearings. Everthing fit fine. A Stateside coupe has 82mm front hub carriers and 75 mm rear hub carriers. Obiviously the ABY coupe must be the same.

I also have an S2 six speed in my Coupe. I had to change the axles, because they are a different length. I had to change the inner CVs, because they are larger on the 6 Speed, but the outer CVs were the same as my coupe.

So in short, USA coupes have the same size hub carriers front and rear as the later ABY coupes.

I have not checked the Family album, but it seems hard to believe that the Euro I5 20V NA coupe would have different hubcarriers than the USA model.

    Greg
They can have my car when they pry my cold dead fingers from the steering wheel.

Hi Greg, your Cq20V is the same as mine hub/bearing size. there is a different bolt size as Martin pointed out (12mm for early cars then they changed to 14mm).

I'm not aware of different bearings but GSF list the front and rear bearing as being the same item. But then it wouldn't fit the hub as the rear hub has a smaller diameter ( see post #2)

best to check the bolt size with your struts.

90quattro! You are the man to ask for guys....

in the States who have CQ's & who want to go over to the 5 lug hubs.
Can you post a list of exactly what is needed to change over to 5 lugs?
It would be a Holy Grail for us poor slobs hoping to do such an upgrade!
          Thanks!!

That is what this thread is ( was) all about.

              4 x S2 hubs 2 front and 2 rear
4 extra wheel studs ( or a set of locking ones) to fill the extra hole
              4 brake disks ( 5 stud)
a set of 5 stud wheels would stop the car falling on the ground as well

This is as well as bearings which may be needed if the 4 stud hubs don't come out cleanly. New ones would be a good idea anyway.

Brake calipers and pads are the same as the CQ20V. May want to fit new to go with the new disks.

              Then the Big brake conversion......
the 19" alloys and rubber band tyres....

First, I don't know if I am the man. I just got the info from different places and things seemed to fit.

One. You only need the hubs. Like David(Stick Insect), I got the hub carriers and hubs basically because the breaker I got them from did not want to separate them. Turn out better for me anyway, because like David's they needed a lot of clean up.

Two. So you have the hubs. You will need a tool to remove the hubs. This sometimes destroys the bearings. So buy a set of front and rear bearings. So now you need the tool to remove the bearings also. I use the SIR tool bearing and hub removal and install tool kit. Costs about $250. I would let you come to my house, but since you are in the Midwest and NY, a little out of the way.

Three. You can remove the hub on the car with the sir tool.
Remove the center cap ons your wheels before jacking up the car.
Loosen the axle nut on all the wheels, easier now than when you have wheels off the car.
Put the car up in the air. Remove the wheels.
Unbolt the calipers, with the carriers, and hang them up somewhere out of the way with coat hangers. Best toward the back of the fender.
Take the rotors off. Remove the axle nuts.
Unbolt the axles and remove them. Some people unbolt the ball joint and swing the strut out of the way and pull the axle out. But I figured, if you are in there, you can do some CV joint service.
On the back side of the hub carrier, you will find a metal ring. Remove it and inspect it. It is for keeping dirt out of the bearing and axle. If it is in bad shape add to your list of replacement parts.
Using the SIR tool or something similiar, remove the hub toward the outside of the car.
Using the SIR tool or something similiar, remove the bearing toward the outside of the car. Even though the family album may show circlips, your coupe should not have any.

Four. Now you want to do a little Maintenance. With where you guys are from, the hub carrier will probably have rust. Use some rust buster, not WD40, and a scotch green pad, and clean the whole area of the bearing, hub carrier, and the back side of the hub carrier. You may even want to clean with laquer thinner and spray paint every thing but the bearing surface area.

Five. Since you have gone to all this trouble to remove this stuff. Do some more maintenance on the ABS. The ABS sensor fits in a small hole in the hub carrier. Remove the sensor, but you may find it rusted in. It doesn't rust itself, but the hole does and this squeezes the sensor, preventing its removal. You can try rust buster, but I ended up having to drive mine out with a hammer. After you pull the sensor out, you will find a sleeve in the sensor hole. Remove the sleeve. If rusted add to parts list. Now you need to clean that hole to remove the rust. David used a reamer, I used a drum sander. Both will work. Reamer will give you a little more precise hole. Paint the hole to prevent further rust. Oh, yeah, as far as paint goes, I used a stainless steel paint from Pro-Planet. Then I used Por15 over it.

Six. Now this is a little side track, but if you took the axles out, do maintenance on the CV joints. Check the boots. I myself unhooked the clamps, pulled back the boot, and using a grease gun fitted with a needle tip, injected grease into the spaces between the ball bearings. Then put the clamps back on the boots. Axles serviced.

Seven. Now back to the hubs. After you do your clean up, you can put it back together. Before you install the bearing, coat the inside of the bearing surface of the hubcarrier with anti-seize. This will do two things. The bearing will go in easier and prevent future rust. In fact, coat the area on the back side of the hub carrier as well. Salt and rust is a pain in your area of the country.

Eight. Install the bearing using SIR tool or someting similar. Coat the bearing area of the hub with Anti-Seize and install the hub, with Sir tool or something similiar. Install the sleeve and the ABS sensor back into the sensor. Coat hole, sleeve and sensor with antiseize before installation. Don't put antiseize in the end of sensor.

Nine. Install the dirt prevention rings on the back side of hub carrier. Install the axle. Use all new bolts on the axles. Coat the splines with Anti-Seize before pushing the axle through the hub. Use new axle bolt(should come with bearing kit) to tighten axle at hub carrier.

Ten. Install rotors. Put anti seize on the mating surfaces between the hub and back side of the rotors. Install the calipers after pushing or turning back in the pistons.

Eleven. Install wheels. Coat the hub centric ring, the back of the wheel and the lug bolts with antiseize, before installation.

That should be about it. Now you may have trouble with the bearing removal. If they are rusted bad, the Sir tool will not be able to provide enough force to remove them. You will have to remove the hub carriers and take them to a shop and have them pressed out. I could remove the fronts with the SIR tool, but the rears took 8000 lbs of press to remove.

David is doing this right now also, and I don't think his coupe is much different than ours. David, if I missed anything fell free to jump right in. I am not the MAN.

As far as rotors go. You will have to source the fronts from overseas. The rears should be the same as 02 and later A4.

If you need any more and info let me know, and if I can I will try to provide it.

NoNonsence, Joe, drop me an email on any questions you have on the Six speed installation.

                Greg

Slightly more comprehensive than my last post, I can't argue with it tho'.

Can't say about the rear hubs.

I used a couple of crow ( Pry) bars to get the hubs out.

I did the shopping list you did the workshop manual.

                          That's teamwork in my view!

It's a simple conversion, just the parts are difficult to get! ( especially in the USA)

Oh boy tell me about it!! The hubs are the hardest and the most EXPENSIVE things to acquire!! For what some places want for the damn things here in the States you could buy a whole set of top brand wheels WITH tires of a reputable make! For some of us with shallow pockets it comes near impossible. Somebody on an Audi Forum here in the States even had the gall to say that if you can't afford it sell the Audi and get a Toyota!!

'It's a simple conversion, just the parts are difficult to get! ( especially in the USA)' should have said 'difficult to get at a reasonable price'. Anything is possible with money.......

I still feel that a remanufactured hub would be OK as long as it's modified properly.

They obviously don't like Toyotas then!
