  • The devil vomits in my kettle (with a water leak)...

I was greeted this morning by a strangely huge amount of condensation on drivers side of windscreen, and as I braked for the 1st mini roundabout I noticed two other things that made me deeply unhappy... A sloshy noise of like a water bottle rolling around behind the drivers seat... and a smell of stale water.

So I stop and reach my hand to behind the seat and its wet - I mean its REALLY feckin wet - utterly saturated carpet. I'm looking for an open water bottle - but there isn't one - the sloshing noise is the water trapped underneath the carpet

******... As I drive there is so much water that it sloshes up to the drivers footwell and by the time I get to the office my trousers are well soaked round the ankles.

The only way I can thing this has happened is my delightful 3yr old daughters fault - she was goofing about with sunroof and window switches last weekend as I waited somewhere with her in the car - now whilst I shut everything again - clearly not well enough. ****....

The water must have come in thru the window as the roof lining is bone dry, but its weird cos when I pushed the button to check the window is up - it moved the tiniest fraction - maybe 2 or 3mm... If someone stood at the door with a hose and squirted in water I could understand but I have no idea how that much rain got in such a small gap.

I raided the bogs at work of as much paper that I could carry to sop up the worst of it and then went about my business.

When I got home to start the cleanup operation - I am amazed to say I have used an entire roll of that industrial paper towel just absorbing the most of what lies behind and under the seat. Theres like 5 litres of water under there. WTF ?

Anyway - cut to the chase... I've never removed carpet and seats before but I'm thinking its the only way to dry this thing out properly. Anyone got any tips on that beyond what I can get from the manual ?

I've got a friend with a dehumidifier I can borrow - so maybe a few nights tucked away in the garage with that will cure things. I'm not worried about rust here - just that mankin smell.

I'll post up some pictures for all to 'enjoy' later... Its a Friday 13th I'll not forget for a while and that sweet child o mine is gonna have to pay for the damage and hardship she has caused !!!! Oh no she won't - she'll get off scott free as usual.

Its my own fault for not double checking the frickin windows -

I need to go back out now and dry it out some more. I really could have done without this, but worse things happen at sea I suppose.

This has happened to my B3, I think the water came in through the bulkhead by the fusebox in my case. However, I removed a plug in the floor behind the drivers seat (from underneath). This let the water drain out. However it is an old B3q so it has never been 'fixed'.

Sorry I cant help with the interior removal, but the drain 'may' help but in your case would need sealed up again afterwards.

Ahh yes - floor bungs... I'd forgotten about them in the flap. Good one.

Its deffo not coolant from the heater matrix (thank gawd) - its just rain water. Still flummoxed by the amount of it though.

Are you sure it hasnt come down the blukhead? Was the front parked up hill?

In theory if rain got in the window it would run into the door (or quater) and out the drains safely outside...

Car parked flat... and double checked bulkhead and fusebox area - all fine and dry.

me too. ive seen small amounts before but not bucket loads.

i used to use a cig lighter wet and dry vac daily in the corraqdo whilst i plucked up the courage to do the matrix.

blocked sunroof drains? broken rear hatch seal.

                  Sorry to hear that Paul!

I had a leaky door also, was there any water in the doors? If not id say its not the door and like you say, the sunroof or something.

Lets just hope the seats done have to be removed to get the carpet out

I had a similar mess after leaving the car parked up for a while, in my case it was coming though the door seal below the A pillar. The sound deadening under the carpet acts like a super sponge and takes an age to dry out, it holds an amazing amount of fluid. I would suggest removing the seats and lifting the carpet, then get to work with a sponge. News papers also works great, i left a load of them under the carpet to soak up the last of the moisture and replaced them every few days.

I could understand that suggestion if I'd been driving the damn car - but it has sat out all week without a wheel turned. No way water has got in that way.

I emptied 6" of water from the spare wheel well on the UrS4 I recently bought I just couldn't fathom out why there was so much and still need to find out where it's coming in... I was relieved when I found out the wheel well was plastic.

I've emptied it and shoved in the dehumidifier... but it's amazing how quickly it fills again. I was just lucky it was all contained
