that has always been the conclusion i have come to - SCs have their benefts but loose out - they really don't produce the bang for the buck...

I was merely musing about the 7A really - if you had 100bhp/litre with is the reasonable top end figure, then, 230bhp in N/A form is a completely different experience to 230bhp of FI power..

of course to reach 230bhp from a 7a without FI would be an expensive and labour intensive route.... much cheaper just to drop in an ABY

what you would find is that its harder to tune, fuel and drive than the equivilent turbo motor as the compression needs to be much higher hence pushing the engine closer to the "det line". its a thin line too on NA. with a 7a id go big turbo as i said basically a 16v + 1 pot.

id do scats, wisecos. CNC heads FI port with bigger exhaust valves. BIG turbo. header of choice. 3" straight through. maybe 3k but you'll get a far superior engine to a ABY for making big power.

there are many benifits to useing a NA engine as a big power FI engine. port size cams inlet sizes. to name a few. theese engines need to draw air in so are generally more efficient as an out of the box unit.

Still reakon a supercharger would be good, I have brought up usung both before so you get turbo top end but you would fill the engine bay with pipework even more.

the trouble with compound charging is the switchover... thats an engineering nightmare

I thought VAG had made a compound charged Polo recently?

              Clever little germans

they are lying of course about being innovators.. the Delta S4 had compound charging 20 years ago... and the Sport Quattro S1 did too didn't it?
