AFAIK that's only possible if you send the buyer a request for payment. If the buyer sends money without you requesting for it he/she can't get it back.

You can charge back at any point.
It has nothing to do with paypal, gift or not, it goes via the credit card issuer.

Most commonly someone will steal credit card numbers, order a bunch of stuff through a mail forwarder, place orders.
The original owners then notice it, close their cards and all the payments are charged back because they were not authorized by the card holder.

The merchant ends up without money and goods.
If the merchant withdrew the money from paypal before sending the goods, his paypal balance goes negative and he has paypal debt collectors after him.

That's bad indeed. But luckily there's bank transfer still...

oh no, that's not an option either. But there is always a friendly forum member with a credit card out there to help

It's both. You can play the victim with the CC company and try to get a refund, and you can also issue one through paypal, which is the "common" way for people to do it.

There isn't really a way to stop someone doing this, and as the seller you have to assume paypal will always side with the recipient... they usually do.
