Questions on s2

So I live in the states. I recentlly just bought a 88 audi 90 5 spd. I was kind of curious where the whole s2 series came in. I have never seen a s2 here in the states. I dont know if thats because they wern't avalabile or what. If you could tell me some features and what other model is most compaires like that would be greatly apreciated

I'n no specialist but I'd say twice the hp, twice the torque, 6 speed g/box, better stock road handling, in a few words just one of the finest german high performance engines ever built !

And the cherry on top is that it's an engine that's just begging to be tuned for even more POWER !!!

I just love this engine, dude !

Hi there,

The S2 was the next generation of the fabulous Audi Quattro, based on the B3/B4 shape Audi 80, rather than the type 85 shape. It was the first Audi in the S-line and was therefore the top of the 80 range at the time, with much higher standard fitments and options such as aircon/climate, heated leather seats, headlamp washers etc and also has unique white dials. Read S2central for a good insight into the car.

I don't know why the S2 was never imported into the States, but there are several guys on this forum running S2 or even RS2 setups on your side of the pond. I understand that they start with a coupe quattro, but I don't know what they do for engines.

Didn't the 100 or 200 turbo go to the US? That might give you a source of required parts to complete the conversion.

Is your 90 a 10v or 20v engine? There not that different when you get under the car, the first model S2 with the 3B engine is basically a cq20v with a turbo bolted on, only real difference in suspension is the shocks and springs, 5 stud hubs, and that’s about it. Put it this way every part that is different is interchangeable so it’s very easy to build your own S2 if you have the bits. ...doing so myself...

Late model ABY engine cars were an evolution of the 3B with coil pack ignition, and a 6 speed gearbox. Again you can also bolt these parts into your car and make your own.

People often make the assumption the S2 is unique and a superior car than the non turbo models, when in fact its the other way around, the non turbos existed first and the S2 evolved out of them by bolting an Audi 200Q 3B engine into a cq20v.

As to handing better well, i just don’t see how, there the same car with more weight on the nose. I would even go as far as to say a cq20v with S2 shocks and springs would handle better.

And just to land another bombshell, you will find reading all the early road tests the 90 quattro was always regarded as the sweeter handling car vs the coupe. For a project car I’d say your off to a good start
