What is the deal with buying in the states??.....import duty into Canada??....what other costs would I incur??.....it's just I have seen a few nice s6's over that way!!...even the last s4's look very nice......
I've tried looking around europe (granted through ebay) and cannot find a suitable car
to bring with me......
Hey-ho....off now as someone is coming to look at the car....
Mike
Duty is always a pain, plus buying in the US is not all it's cracked up to be sometimes. The one thing that you may get from the US that you can't find here is cars that have not seen salt (used heavily up here during the winter to clean up the roads).
You could also do what I am doing and piece togather an S2 using a Coupe Quattro as a starting point. Not only is it a fun hobby, you get the satisfaction of having something that not many others have on this side of the pond
by no means is this a complete list but i'm sure you'd have to pay the dreaded GST (Gouges and thumbScrews Tax ) provincial tax, some kind of import duty (might be another way of saying the gst and provincial taxes) probably some processing fee and maybe an airconditiong tax (called environmental fee)
in the end, getting a car from the states makes sense in two cases. the car is rare and can't be found here or the dollar swings such that the price is too hard to pass up. be careful tho, there are certain cars in the states that are not allowed in canada...if i can find the link to the list i'll post it up
as for salt, definitly true my side of the rockies but in vancouver....not something to worry about. it's mostly rain there. a buddy of mine moved here from vancouver in his mk2 jetta coupe (early one too) it had somthing stupid like 300,000+kms on it. it looked like it was built yesterday. so west coast cars won't have rust. you will pay accordiongly. example: a corrado VR6 from the east is expensive at $10k, in the west, you'd be lucky to find a G60 for that price....
you're movin to a good area to find a decent car, personally, i wouldn't bother with the extra effort to buy from the states or bring one from europe unless you found a car that was not found on these shores.
and again, get a 2.7tt and visit the local shops and you'll be pushin 300, 350+ hp in the matter of a couple of hours....
cheers for that "ottawa coupe".....looks like the car I was looking at (S6 avant) aren't allowed into Canada anyway!!!..nevermind I will have to look at something else!!!...
