    The Audi S1 :)

A friend recently sent me this link, it's a nice article on the S1. The S1 is one of my personal dream cars....

        Mik,

That write up of the S1's history takes me right back to my teenage years

There really is nothing like standing in a forest, in the dead of night, waiting for the lights and then the crackle of a works rally car

I still have a piece of Walter Rohrl's car from the night he rolled it down that Welsh hillside in the RAC rally.

As they say "those were the days"

        Cheers
        Steve

Steve, that's awesome! I haven't had the privilege of seeing an S1 up close yet, but I have lot's of videos...

The S1 was a monster, there's no doubt about it. And one of the amazing things was it could beat anything in it's class, which was an amazing feat considering the S1 is a front-engined machine built on a production car and most of the others in it's class were purpose-built machines....:eek2:

Talking of seeing S1's close up. I had the privilege and the pleasure of having hands on access to not one but two S1 rally cars and a sport quattro courtesy of my ex girlfriends now (sadly) deceased father, Tom Hammonds. Dialynx now have one of his rally cars and restored his sport quattro.

He was an audi fanatic. The car he used for hill climbing was incredible to watch as it stormed over the rest of the field (including ex f1 cars and all manner of over tuned kit cars, etc etc)

The sound as it sat on line on full song was superb, followed by the bang as it took off and disappeared from sight round the first bend.

Unfortunately the opportunity to go out as a passenger in it never arose. What I would have done to experience what 0-60 in 1.47 seconds (including a gear change!) feels like. He had many stories of press folk and friends who had been out for a lap with him and fallen out of the car, white as sheets, when he stopped.

Another gem was the tale of when Triumph, who are based down the road, invited him to race against one of their bikes to prove how well it performed. They were more than a little shocked when he stormed off the line and the bike didn't get a second look.

I think I owe him the honour of getting me started with my love of Volkswagen and Audi. It's a pity he isn't around now, you can guarantee he'd have my s2 in pieces and on it's way to becoming a fire breathing monster before you'd finished this.

            Here's to Tom

I can remember walking round a works S1 before the start of the 1985 RAC in Nottingham and thinking wow!

To hear any quattro in the woods heading your way always made the hair on my arms rise but the S1 is even more awesome than the A2 version spitting flames and crackling.

Imagine then how chuffed I was last weekend at the festival of speed to meet Hannu Mikkola and Walter Rhorl and get a pic and autographs - as my boyhood heros' was a dream moment

And for proof I'll post up a picture.....:eek2:

Neither was driving a quattro unfortunately at the festival of speed and neither offered to take me up the hill but hey - who cares!!!!
