Ok but compared to the 3B Servotronic or compared to the "simpler" ABY p/steering ?Originally posted by CoreyHe's comparing it to the ur quattro, when both were new (not the worn out tired examples like Fatty has) the S2's steering couldn't compare to the ur's directness
I've driven a Ur and though the steering did feel more direct ( a bit BMW'ish come to think of it ), I wouldn't say that it felt "better"...Midnight Blue S2 - SOLD - 1993 S2 AvantComment

reasons to own one :
it's quick, secure, well built and satisfying obscure.
i would ad, it s quick and if u want it can be very quick ! go from 220 to 400 hp !
and very secure !, go for 996 brake upgrade !

I have to agree with most of the comments, steering always feels inert and lacks feedback on Audis, they have always been that way. Nothing you can’t engineer out with harder bushings mind you. Also i think that review was in a 3B which has notoriously horrid steering with the servotronic rack. If you disagree go drive a similar aged Porsche, or even a car without power steering.
Gear change also was never an Audi strong point either, and 6speeds in my opinion feel even more disconnected from the action. My biggest gripe is the clunky nature, the Audi box's don’t like being rushed, they like smooth changes.
At the end of the day the UR and S2 were very different cars, and designed to do very different things. UR was built to rally where as the S2 was a refined cruiser/autobahn stormer. Audis real trick was to make the car just that, a refined cruiser but also retaining that rally car DNA which gives it remarkable poise and performance down your favorite twisty B road. That’s something Subaru and Mitsubishi can only dream of achieving. And a wonderful combination i don’t think has been reproduced since.
So yeah they could be better, but show me a better all-rounder as a car?91CQ20v - Gone to a new home

This article has to be taken with a pinch of salt. The sub-title gives it away surely?! "All the cars I've *never* bought.. He's had a test drive, applied his motoring journalistic knowledge and done a quick web search. All this equals a one page throway article. Pointless exercise if you ask me - it's just not as iconic as the UR.. not front page news.. hurrumph!!Comment

I agree about the box not liking quick changes, but I also agree with many others (including the wife
) that you at least know when an Audi is in gear. Reasuring I would say. After all how often are you likely/want to wrench it as quickly as possible from one gear to next anyway and wreck the thing
.
As far as the steering is concerned, I've never driven a 3b, but with 225 tyres on 17 inch rims, I find my steering (ABY Avant) improved and reasonably good feel actually
As for the UR/S2 debate. I agree that the S2 was never meant as direct replacement, both have superior qualities over one another.
I recommend you just have one of each - no debate required
S2 still equals no bigger bang for your buck it terms of build quality, refinement, potential horespower and TORQUE. Oh and by the way, probably the best and most knowledgable Forum on the Net

Originally posted by CoreyTechnically the S2 was far superior to the urq it replaced, it's downfall was the fact that the ur had a huge enthusiast following and was very well respected in the motoring press.
The urq was hand built, the S2 was a mass produced vehicle.
urq 11 year production run 11500 (ish) made
S2 5 year production run 20000 (ish) made
As Paul said, S2 Central seems to quote a lot less - under 9,500 S2s - but in a shorter timescale though, so the number per year is much higher.
I don't think the report is that bad, doubtless the Civic fanatics will be nagging about what this guy says about their chosen car next week! Mind you, would be good to sit him in the passenger seat of one of our "refined" examples - best put some plastic and newspaper down in case he cacks his pants though!!!
