Audi is busy prepping three new versions of its new A5 coupe – headlined by this blistering 450bhp RS5 that arrives early next year to take on its new BMW M3 and Mercedes C63 rivals. Like all R models, the topdog A5 has been fully developed by Quattro, Audi’s in-house go-fast engineering team.
As our impressions show, the RS5 will get the full Quattro treatment. The glorious high-revving 4.2-litre V8 that powers the RS4 gets plumbed into the RS5’s nose, complete with two small and highly responsive turbochargers that will take peak power up to the 450bhp. That’s not a great deal more than the S5’s 354bhp, but the RS5 searing pace will come from its phenomenal blower-enhanced torque – expect at least 500lb ft of twist action to plateau across the rev range.
If it does come, then it may be behind the new RS6 or visa versa. And only after the current B7 RS4 ends.
Reason being, quattro GMBH only ever have one RS model being produced at any one time.

yes - good point Jas
now, I've just had a thought...how about a Forum trip to the quattro GmbH factory...? anyone got any contacts at Audi?
Past: S2 ABY coupe RS2 spec with lots of mods, S4 B5 saloon, RS6 C5 saloon, S8 D2 FL, RS4 B7 saloon, S4 B6 avant
Never noticed that about the RS models before, i wonder will the R8 put a dent in there capacity to produce RS models in the future. Must be the only reason why there was never more then one RS made at a time
They really should have an RS of each model to compete with the M cars and AMG's.
I have a suspicion that we are not only going to see the v10 put into these cars but also a big v10 TDi with some serious pulling power. Wouldn’t be surprised if they make the R8 the worlds first diesel super car. ...just because they can

I know what QVS is. I know who built it, I know what the priciples are... And I know it's really f-ing good! I'll tell you a wee bit.
Audi did not design it, it's used by other manufacturers/will be used by other manufacturers soon but not in the same way. Basically, the layout of the driveline is the same as it's "always" been. Gearbox has a Torsen T-3. Rear axle then? This is the whole deal. It's is an active rear diff, it's a torque vector diff. It can apply force, not just direct force as usauall diff's can. If you know how to handle a quattro car, I mean, those of us that truly can drift a car through a roundabout like there is nothing to it, won't even notice this thing working... For those more average, like journalists and hairdressers, this will be a big step forward. No, seriously, this rear diff coupled with the "new-ish" center diff will cure allot of the understeering and it will also make the car handle much more consistent. It will be fun to read the reviews of this car...
Where does that so-called information about having twin-turbos on the RS5 motor come from? That sounds like pure speculation to me. Look at how Audi's petrol engine development has moved completely away from turbos in the S/RS models in the last couple of years, why would they suddenly change back now?
Apart from that, that is a damn fine looking car! I read a road test of the A5 range yesterday and interestingly the one that came out on top was the 3.0TDi quattro version because of the nuclear aircraft carrier-quantities of torque.

I agree with you Dan, but they must have got it from somewhere...unless it's just wishful thinking...
A lot of what is reported as fact is journalistic speculation - there are miles and miles of column inches that need filling every day/ week/ month and such a limited amount of genuine subject matter (there really aren't that many new cars/ variants released every day!) and all the publications are trying constantly to "out-scoop" eachother to catch the buyer's attention that inevitably some of it gets made up (by journos and by the manufacturers who want to get the coverage too don't forget!). Trust me, I work in PR
I think it is quite interesting that Audi has moved away from turbos at the same time as BMW has started toying with them (sequential twin turbos in the 330), and Mercedes is blowing its engines all over the place with turbos and KOMPRESSORS (love that), but Audi got teased for years by those rivals for only being able to make big HP with forced induction, so they're going out there with hi-tech NA engines to prove a big engineering point.
(if you want to indulge in some more speculation, the drive for hi-tech NA engines also came about during a period in which Audi was considering entering F1 to compete against BMW and Merc)
