Dead dash cluster in 1994 80 TDi

    Hi all

I currently have two 80 TDi's and I'm just buying an S2, but before I can sell my Avant I need to fix the dash.

I fitted an ebay special central locking kit. It works a treat, but I was a bit lazy when it came to the wiring and I decided to take a +12V constant and earth straight off the back of the radio wires. Well, it was getting dark

Now the clocks are dead. The fuel gauge works OK but the temp gauge, rev counter and speedo are all lifeless. Also, the two lights (coolant and something else?) that flash when the ignition is turned on but before the engine is started (where the Autocheck is on an S2) don't flash any more, and when the engine is running the oil pressure light is constantly on (presumably because there's no rev signal?).

I bought some more clocks from a breaker and they don't work either, so it must be something in the car. A fuse had blown (can't remember which one, this happened a while ago) and I replaced it but I think the damage had been done.

Does anyone have a clue where I should start to look? The turn signals and most of the warning lights work, as does the illumination.

    Any help appreciated.

(PS - I promise not to be so lazy with the S2 )

Have you tried disconnecting the central locking kit? If not try that first. Those ebay special kits can have some strange wiring for the locking circuits and if you've got a mismatched wire you could be feeding 12v down an earth or something similar. It's easily done especially with instructions that hardly make sense.

I'm curious as to why you wired it in at the front of the car though. All the connections you need are on the CL pump in the boot. You just need to cut and connect the wiring in.

Finally, assuming you can't fix the dash in it how much do you want for the car?

Yes, that's the first thing I did. No change.

Well I'm sure you know very well that Avants hold their money, and it will get fixed

Having said that, it will be up for sale in September. I'll have the S2 by then.

Because I wasn't sure where I'd get constant +12V from, so I put it in the front.

It sounds like you have a supply or earth problem to the dash insert. Can you give me a list of everything that doesn't work including other systems (Foglight, HRW etc) and I'll see if I can find a wiring diagram to see if there is a common supply/earth circuit. Has it got an airbag? I think I've got one for the MY94 TDi (non Airbag) but not for the MY95 on TDi.
