Bought an '85 Series II quattro - help required!

    Hi

(I seem to be starting every thread in the 'Audi' forum at the moment)

    I bought this car:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=270192805098

and picked it up last night. It drives really nicely (even when compared to my mint '96 ABY coupe) and the exhaust sounds absolutely fantastic- epescially round town! Seems like a great car, you really have to look hard to find any rust and interior wise everything seems to work. Cat D, not an issue, it was a side impact (sicker hasn't been replaced) but the repair job seems top notch!

I'll get some pictures up as soon as I can, because those ones don't do the car justice.

Problems with the car, are as follows:

    1. Idle control valve is broken, so car sits at 1500rpm when its warm. Not such an issue to me, but when coupled with no. 2, produces no.3....!

    2. Thermostat for fan to come on obviously doesn't work. Theres an aftermarket (nice job actually) switch on the dash in place of one of the blank switches to turn the fan on.

    3. I let it overheat (forgot to turn fan on when I was stopped for a few mins idling at 1500rpm) and water started to escape from the coolant reservoir through the filler cap. Topped it up etc and did 200 trouble free miles and then just tonight I was sat outside the house a bit long (again forgetting to swtich the fan on) after giving it some beans and it started to overheat a bit again and this time a small crack appeared in the side wall at the top of the coolant reservoir.

VERY ANNOYING, means I need to get a new reservoir now, anyone know where I can get one- and quickly? (bought this so that I didnt have to put loads of miles on my S2).

On a run the car runs so nicely, if a bit loud at times with that exhaust! But if I forget to put the very efficient fan on, it does seem to overheat within 2/3min.

Any replies would be very helpful!

    Phil

Looks good there, we like white CQ's.. Nice one.

Fan wise, It'll probably just be the thermal switch in the radiator.

Pete Reeve will probably have one in stock, same with the header if you want new. Otherwise try a scrappy, I'm pretty sure the bottle is common with other Audis of a similar vintage (80,90,100, Coupe etc).

Might just pick up an Idle Control Valve too...

I'm sure I've seen Idle Control Valves going on E-bay. New they are quite expensive.

Coolant resevoirs are approx £25 last time i got one from vagparts.

When you say the isv is broken have you done the usual of clearing out the crap inside it with IPA?

As for those manual overide switchs i have seen several on that era audi 5pot.Even if the switch has been working people have installed them as a backup. For christ sake dont let it overheat, those KV's heads are easily warped.BTDT

I may have a spare isv, will have a look for you.

          Thanks guys.

And spink- that would be great. What do you want for it?

Do you think I should drive it with the thumb nail crack in the reservoir? All I need to do is drive it to and from work, shouldn't be sat in traffic! On the weekend my mate is breaking his 80, so I'm gonna nab his coolant reservoir for a little while

How long was it sat idling before it overheated?Should take ages with the weather the way it is at the moment.

And can you see a part number on the iSV?

Car was sat for about 5min the first time, but remember that is coming straight off a motorway doing 70ish to a steady idle of 1500rpm with no air flow... is that normal? It was bloody freezin last night tho!

Tonight it overheated and put a little crack in the coolant reservoir about 3min after manouvering it around (with alot of over-exaggerated throttle blips, coz i cant help myself!) Again I'd come from a fast moving road where i was giving it some beans (nothing above 4k though).

Bit annoying- hope the overheating thing doesnt become the bain of this cars life! I'm just hoping that its a 22yr old plastic coolant tank thats being crap- and its not a car that is going to overheat constantly!

Just went to look at the part no. on the ICV and I can't find one. There is a small white sticker on it but thats all faded. The hose clip says VDO Germany on it, so at least it came from the right company, one would hope!

I expect ours would be in 'tea-bag' mode after 5 mins idling after a run... I'd say that's normal... especially as you're missing the radiator cowels.

Some people I've spoken to have said that I shouldn't run with the fan on constantly... but why not? Surely it won't run that cold, as the aiflow at speed will be a far greater for the radiator than the fan would. And plus if it does run a degree cold its better than me blowing a head gasket for not turning the fan on!

Didn't drive the car this morning, just incase it gets hot and the water comes out of the crack in the side of the expansion tank. I put some duck tape over the crack but I can't imagine thats overly robust!!!

Where can I get a new coolant reservoir from? I looked on vagparts but couldn't find one.

How strange, my friend is planning on taking his engine out of his B3 coupe this weekend too! Tis the weekend for dismantling cars!

I'll give them a ring at 9am, and try and get express delivery!

Vagparts will have trouble getting one of these, I was in last week trying to get a new one (not that I needed one just like the thought of a new one)

I'd get it sorted rather than risk running without as it would be expensive if anything went wrong. Did use to have loads of spares for these from two coupe's I broke but I gave all the bits to the new owner of my coupe quattro.

                              Haha!

                              Question...

Will a 1991 B3 coupe have the same expansion tank as my 1985 Coupe?

I might be able to get a replacement on saturday!
