A V12 TDi - Torque Monster is very apt.... 738lbft is bang on 1000Nm - you'd need the neck muscles of a Lewis Hamilton for that on full chat.

What on earth would that sound like ?

I like the idea - as great as that V10 Lambo engine - its BTDT - why put it in the R8 package ? This idea is more 'vorsprung' dare I say

Oh and if they are aiming for 1000Nm capability - that means it must have tuning potential / headroom for even more gazoil burning ooooomf

They've just revealed the 'concept' version at Detroit. There are tons of pics form the press pack here, and a neat studio vid of the car here.

Not sure about that front end treatment, but I like the NACA duct on the roof! 500 bhp and 738 lb-ft (from 1750 rpm!) ... and 23 mpg. Not so bad.

well they'll need to put a pertol V10 in it if they make this TDI concept, or else their quickest car will be an oil burner

I like what they've done with the front end - looks more aggresive.

Highly interesting project, but it isn't all that quick.

Dunno but... an R8 with a redlineat 4000rpm or less??? Don't like it. Real cars are NOT diesels. It does matter the torque on a sporty exotic, but high rpm and high power too! When you are at high levels on those 3...I'm sure you'll enjoy it A LOT! I'd go for a 5.2 twin turbo R8

The entire reason for doing this is the R10 race car - and the R8 road car was always intended to be marketed on the back of the race car (after all, Audi usually reserve the "R" designation for race cars and only use "S" or "RS" for road cars).

Diesel has always had the potential to be this good, you get more bang for buck.

The only thing has been the rev range but this is being addressed in newer cars.

Saab have just released a twin turbo diesel car.

The oil burning future is brighter than you think

Nice car but even if i could afford it i will not buy it. Race car MUST be a petrol car with high RPM. I have mada test drive with A5 3.0 TDI. Powerfull enough as a daily ride but with manual transmission it sucks. You have to change gears very often becouse of RPM and it kills all fun. Maybe it will make better impression with automatic transmission, but i haven't tried this one yet. So for me it is a big NOT TO GO. Sorry to mention BMW here, but their M cars are always petrol and high RPM and that is the reason why people love them. Big V10 at 8000 RPM
