Trans Am and Imsa in the US, basically every touring champinonship in the world (Sweden, Germany, Denmark, SouthAfrica, France...), rallying.... It's a truly long list. And, I don't think any brand honestly can say that the impact they had on any motorsport is greater than the impact Audi had on rallying in the 80's. Someone would surely have realized that 4wd is the best sooner or later - point is, Audi did realize it and they also proved it. Looking at racing, I think at least to the masses, when Audi hit the tracks with the A4 Quattro's, beating everyone even with penalty weight, that was the real slap in the face on fwd and rwd. Sure, ok, fine, yeah, yeah, right, heard all the yapping from the Beemer crowd (sorry for writing that horrid name out on this forum but I'm trying to make a point) about how the rules benefitted FWD cars over RWD and how it's just too unfair that 4wd was allowed... Fact is, it was allowed. No one said Beemer (sorry again) or anyone else weren't allowed to build a 4wd car and race that. They chose not to and by doing that they sort of gave away all their rights to argue.

        - Pikes Peak....need I say more

        - Some minor success in sports car racing, particularly at Le Mans as well I think you'll find...something about 5 wins in a row (if you include the Bentley) and the first EVER diesel to win ANY sports car race.

        - The Autounions were the first mid-engined F1 cars....err like we still have today

        - The Autounions in the 1930's could develope over 550 horsepower from a V16, but when in 1938, the maximum engine displacement for Grand Prix cars was limited to 3 litres for blown engines, Autounion developed a V12. This engine was designed to provide optimum torque at low engine speeds. It developed so much torque that Rosemeyer later it around Nürburgring in a single gear!

        - First car to top 400KPH (set in 1937) to put that in context, ONLY the Veyron can do that 70 years later and with TWICE the horsepower!

        - Then there were all the Autounion grand prix victories, driven by the likes of Rosemeyer and Nuvolari Those silver arrows just make me drool

        - What about this one then...In 1988, Audi wond the Trans Am championship with 200 turbo quattro. The SCCA immediately changed the regs to a two wheel drive only and banned cars with non American engines from taking part.

        Cheers n

I cant think of any series Audi entered where they weren't successful, they have a habit of tearing up the rule book, dominating the series for a while, then move onto something different. Other manufactures may have entered more forms of motorsport, or have been active in motorsport for longer, but not many have the same success rate as Audi.

The only thing left for Audi to attack is F1 - they have entered and dominated just about every other genre of four wheeled motorsport.

                it

is trouly awsome what they have accomplished, but they will not enter the F1 scene any time soon, as they will continue to compete in the le mans and Dtm. They where asked once if they would enter, and the "fuhrer" said no.
But it would be fun tho, and i think they would have crushed it.

Id love to see them return to rally too and knock Subaru for six with a 4x4 car

Because it's not so many of those wins. It's PR stuff you know. Every manufacturer claims, that he dominated all races, bla bla bla. Look at lancia story, with delta, 037. BMW with M3, mitsubishi with lancer, peugeot, alfa, etc. Almost every manufacturer had falls and ups.

IMHO audi success was only in one thing - they managed to get strong focus of the company to the goal, enough funds at the right time. And management was _really_ supporting the idea of winning. Not like "oh not again you want to blow so much money for your toys ". Big budget + wise heads + good driver selection = you are the champion. It's possible even for KIA (not sure about budged ).

However I like what they build for rally races, and like it very much!

                          Yeah, good honest answer !!

i definitely like the Audi Brand name, but we must confess that it s only from the 80 s with the quattro that Audi claimed some real recognised success, before that, it was just one of those name in car industry.
Nothing like the ones of Porsche, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, or even Mercedes ( beurk !) with a real pedigree from the 1930s or 1950s....
I remember in the late 1970s, when i was playing with the dinky toys of my father, quite a list of different names for the race cars, but none of Audi ! ( ok, auto union, but still not Audi !)

Audi made history, but quite lately compared to others !
