    Question about 96 mod S2

I have heard a few times that the 96 mod S2 shares gearbox and running gear with the Rs2, does anybody Know if this is correct?

The RS2 came with a six speed "CRB" transmission with the wide, flexible 105H first gear shaft. Gear ratios, 1 through 6 were: 3.50 1.89 1.32 1.03 0.86 0.71

The ABY S2 coupes came with a CGR six speed transmission with the same gear ratios as the CRB. Up to build date 5/95 or Trans serial number 77643, these CGRs came with the 01E 311 105 E narrow but flexible (to take the torque on launch without spalling the first gear teeth). From 05/95 to 12/95 (should be trans serial numbers above 77644), the S2s came with a CGR that had the 01E 311 105 H wide flexible first gear shaft of the RS2s CRB transmission.

      Ref: http://www.elektro.com/~audi/01E/ind2.html

As for the other "running gear" obviously, the hubs and brakes of the S2 are different than the RS2. I suspect brakes and shocks are different too.

Thanx, so if I understand this right it comes with a S2 gearbox with same gear ratio as an RS2, and with the wide 1. gear as the RS2?

Only if the transmission serial number (SN) is > 77644. Just assuming the build date > 05/95 = 105H isn't good enough. You need to check the trans SN to confirm.

Another qustion: Anybody have a clue what vin/chassis number the 96 modell start and stop on? Would just be fun to know what number in the line mine is..

I was of the understanding that the late S2 boxes shared the wide 1st gear with the RS2 box, but NOT the flexible shaft.

                    Cheers n

having used S2 central`s vin decoder I was pretty sure it is a 96 mod. I thought it was built 08/95 but it seems it was built between 05/95 and 08/95 since the vin number is 001300..
and as I said, I guess i`ll have to check the serial number on my gearbox..

Thanx for all your help and know how guys

If you check out the link I gave in one of my posts above, you can see that the info suggests your understanding is wrong, i.e. the later CGR S2 boxes got the 105H wide AND flexible first gear shaft not the 105J wide (and not flexible) first gear shaft. Have a look here:

If you have better documentation, please share.

REVISION NOTE: 1/12/03 - in previous versions of this document, I've refered to a hardened and a non-hardened 1st gear. This comment about "hardened" was based on my (incorrect) assumption that the part numbers for the engines with higher torque used an extra surface hardening for reliability. I have recently found that the higher torque engine applications had a necked down mainshaft that would flex a little bit, thus keeping sudden torque impacts from loading the gear surfaces quite as much. Here are pictures of both types of mainshafts . Please note that the description "flexible 1st" is talking about the necked down versions of the mainshaft, which would permit a bit of "wind up" upon sudden torque load. Thus this main shaft was acting like a torsion bar spring in a suspension.
