Some general questions....90Q 200Q What Audi to get??

    Hey guys,

Looks like im gonna get back into the old Audi world of things.Iv'e been toying with the old RWD Volvo's for sometime.Got my 90 740 Wagon into the low 13's with just a .50 trim.

Well anyway theres a fella around the corner from me who has a 1990 Audi 90 Quattro. Now my 1st Audi was an 90Q from 1989 with all the special features and so forth.Sadly like an idiot at the time i got in over my head. Was gonna be one of the few to do the AAN swap to her.Lost my job and other things came crashing down.Had to junk the car then i got into the Volvo world of things.

Anyway im left here thinking what Audi should i purchase this time around.I have a good freind who can help me pull off a AAN swap into the 90Q no problem there. My questions are as follows.

Is the 7A good for boosting?Seems today people run higher CR and high boost to make the most power.Another question is how strong is the 7A on boost?Would it be worth boosting?

The AAN engine code has become pretty cheap (i paid $2500 for my old one in the day).Looks like i can get one for under $1700 with everything. Now what are some of the basic's to do to a AAN motor?I know the chipsets and so on.But id like to be able to do 13's maybe 12's and still be daily driverable.Which i think can be done as alot of you guys been there done that haha.I have no problem working on either of these cars so that won't bother me i have a daily driver so i can have a project car.My general question is what will be quote on quote SAFE for a 7a?if possible lol.

The other choice is to go ahead and look for a 1990+ 20V Turbo 200q for $2500 or buy this 1990 90 Qauttro 20V for $800.Car has sat for about 6 months but i think the 90q's are lighter then the 200q's i know that the 90q's weighed alot less then todays AWD cars.I think myself the best bang for the buck would to be to purchase the 90Q and drop a AAN motor in her and enjoy.Should be a mid/high 13 sec car with the swap done.As they tend to haul *** on stock boost in such a light awd car. Also has anyone megasquirted a 3b/AAN motor safely?I really don't wanna shell out $2900 for 034's ECU system.I would like to know what the stock ECU's are safe for.And also how strong is the AAN engine can it be pushed to 450hp on stock internals?I know a few people on here have done it just not sure of the info or not.

    Thanks!

90q will be lighter than the 200

7a engines are good for converting to turbo power, you'd need the head machined for the water rail and check you have sodium filled exhaust valves, then worth while changing the rods and head gasget apart from that the engine should afaik be good for big power.

AAN you'd just need to change the rods.

Quite a few threads on here with different engines being used i.e. flat on my backs using a 7a and iirc djones's urq engine is originally a AAN.

im putting a AAN into my 90.. i think its way easier than doing all that work to the 7a right now. i can swap it in and have it running strong and fast while i get the parts together for the motor upgrade.

Thanks for the info.Yeah im told a 90q in stock weight with the AAN engine and a chip will throw that car into the mid 13's.As were if i did that with the 200q with just the chip id be in the mid to high 13's.

My ABY S2 coupe (heavy car) does late 13s with the interior in according to the GTech / GPS. Stripped it should do low 13s, that's with a 300bhp chipped ABY = AAN. The 90q is 300kg lighter so with an AAN it'll do 13s no worries.

Hehehe.Guess i will be buying that 90Q and picking up a AAN engine. So even without the chip it should do 13's ahahaha.Thats epic lol.Im still doing research on to what i should do for basic mods.I could have a exhaust t3/t4 manifold made and pick up a big ole holset.Question is what would motronic think about that? Our old volvo's are motronic and have adaptable fuel systems.Which learn curves and so forth i think the AAN engine does the same thing.Expect id be off the maps for both with the manifold and 25 psi thru a HX35-40.Oh well thats when ill pick up a wideband and moniter things .Im not afaird of pushing motronic as it learns and motronic in general runs super rich afr's would be from 9-10 under full boost or somewhere near thats why i need to get a wideband when i upgrade.

            Thanks .

AFRs on a homefries are 11.5-12 at WOT for a healthy car. With a 3" zorst, large IC and proper boost hoses and AAN should make 300+bhp on a Homefries, 250+ on stock. It's the difference between 0.8bar midrange and 1.5 bar midrange that's the bigger difference.

Wow i never thought with just basic upgrades such as what you mentioned would make those types of numbers.Good to know you can get alot of useable power out of the stock set up just gotta get a bigger intercooler and 3inch and a chip set.

That's bhp over here in the UK tho, at the flywheel. I know that some of the stuff doesn't quite translate. Still, should = 0-60mph in 5s, 0-100mph in 12-13s and 13.0-13.5s 1/4s when all stripped down.

Alrighty thanks for the info. One last question here.

Was there a difference in rods vs the 7a vs the 3b and ANN engines?Or did they all get the same rods? And what would be considered 'safe' on a 7A boost wise?

I think 15-20psi would be alright long as i have a wideband.I haven't found any known weak links in the audi motors aside from the rods.Which the stock internals on the aan/3b are good for up to 450hp long as its tuned correctly. So i figure a 7A with a proper tune would dish out 300-350hp on the stock internals.Though im not sure of this and thats why i ask questions lol.

                    Thanks .

for that you should change the big end bearings IIRC the crank sprocket is known as a weak spot on these engines. There are stronger ones for sale.

I think 034 makes em though im not sure.I think ill be picking up either another 7A or AAN motor.Basically i wanna build a high CR and high boost motor. So this is what i got figured out as i just wanna do 12's in the end and hang on for dear life lol.

                        Scat rods
                        7A block
                        7A crank
                        3b or aan head
                        Hx35
                        3inch side exit
                        Homemade exhaust manifold
Wide band to watch things. And of course bigger injectors.

I have a spare AAN if you haven't found one yet.
I'm located in Michigan and could ship it.

I have the wiring harness, ECU, and complete engine.

What are you looking to get for it?

Last time i bought a 3b cost me $2500 minus shipping and the motor had 250k on the clock lol. That was 4 years ago though hahaha.
