Advice for a trip to Germany

    Hi guys,

I was wondering if anybody could offer me any advice on a trip I'll be making in a few weeks. Having travelled to the other side of the world from New Zealand, and being an Audi fan/s2 coupe driver, I can't pass up the opportunity to go to Ingolstadt.

I was also thinking about going to Nürnburg & Stuttgart. Are there any other places worth checking out (from a car enthusiasts perspective)? Any advice on what one can actually do at nürnburg? Laps with a driver would be great.

    Cheers,

    George

Rent a nice car and go for a lap or two at Nurburgring - theres lots of folk on here can point you at the best sites to find what days they have public sessions and/or when you can get instructor/demo laps.

I'd also recommend some research into road trips from Germany - via the Swiss alps - some mind-blowing roads and scenery... continuing south on down towards Monaco where you will discover some classic WRC stages, mountain passes and then you simply must walk/drive the GP circuit when you get to sea level. Then you aren't that far away from other automotive meccas such as the Ferrari & Lambo factories... That's if you are brave enough to drive in Italy

The scope for travel in Europe is immense - depends how long you have... the alternative is to trek North into Scandinavia for equally awesome tarmac and landscapes...

Dont take a hire car to the nurburgring! Even tho its a public toll road some hire firms regard it as a racing track. Dont know if its true but gps and paid "spotters" at the ring could result in a big bill (check out ben lovjoy's site nurburgring.org.uk for info). remember 2 try the Uk if u want a photo thru the post tho!

i take it you mean nurburg, the place with the racetrack, not nurnburg, the place with the war crimes trials!

          nice places!

I can second what paul has said just been to Germany myself this year and went to my usual spots which are the mosel starting from trier and heading slowly to cochem making sure of plenty of stops to take in the many tourist towns and villages and from cochem you can go up to the nurburgring. from there you can go to koblenz for the shops which are great and then head south towards friberg and titisee in the black forest which has to be one of the nicest areas in germany making sure you also visit triberg which has the biggest waterfall in germany and there are plenty of superb drives around this area. I went to Ingolstadt about 4 years ago and you have to spend the full day just to look around the museum etc what an amazing place!! oh and the food and especially the beer are good ha ha!!

Be CAREFUL with a hire car.

I lived in Frankfurt for 8 years and took my 1990 2.0ltr 8valve 80 coupe many times to the ring. On many occasions i talked to people there and on more than one occasion we spoke about hire cars and pretty much all the local hire companies pay spotters to check number plates and if one comes up, a) the police will be informed and b) you will be billed for new tires, service, potentially new suspension and the list goes on.

So the moral of the story is, hire a car at least 100km away from the ring from a not so well known hire company

Anyway, great idea, it costs 15 euros per lap, which sounds a lot but believe me the fun you get for that 15 euros, you will be straight back to the car park to buy another ticket for one more lap, thats assuming your brakes are not cooked and your tires not melted.

The first time i went in my 80 coupe, i fried all four disks n pads in 1 lap and my tires..well they were peeling....oh and my engine was sitting with the fan on in the car park at 110 deg!!! ..my time the first time was 12min 20 sec which is slow, but taking into account its only 116 Bhp and i had to drive slow for 3 minutes to let the brakes cool its not nad for the old girl!

            AWESOME.

Im headnig back again soon, but will drive a little more carefully.

            Have fun.
