1995 Quattro Coupe 2.8E History in South Africa?

    Hi guys,

Just joined the forum and wondering if anyone can assist me.

I looking for a little history behind the 2.8E Coupe in SA. I had mine for a year now and haven't seen another 2.8E(V6) on the road apart from a few S2's(5cyl. 2.2 obviously) . I'm a member of Audi Club South Africa and and posted the same request but info seems scarce .

Essentially the same shape as the S2(biggest difference being the motor), I battled to get the car insured as apparently the 2.8E Coupe was produced in too few numbers. According to the insurers, they can only assess the risk of a vehicle with a certain volumes of the model on the road locally to create an M&M code for the insurance industry.

Most companies did have the S2 on their systems and I had endless debates trying to explain how my car looked the same but was a different model of a different value.

Anyway, this led me to believe there must be a lot less 2.8's(coupe's) in the country? I know of seven S2's here in Cape Town, SA but yet to see another 2.8E like mine.

If anyone know's, I'd love to find out a bit more-volumes in the country, racing history, availibility at the time(special request or available off the showroom), etc.

    Any suggestions guys?

    Thanks,
    Kenny.

I can't help you on any SA data I'm afraid but I did have a 2.8E Coupe for 9 years and can tell you they are definitely rarer than the 2.6E, S2 of the smaller engined variants (in the UK at least).

Also, being fairly unknown, be careful of the data held on the model as it is almost always wrong - e.g. some insurance companies think it is a saloon because they don't list the Coupe as having the 2.8E

Also, the few wibbly wobbly web sites that mention the 2.8E give fabulous specs. The best one I have seen says it has a top speed of 127MPH which is odd when you think that mine did 108MPH in 3rd, over 135MPH in 4th and I was clocked by a police car at 146MPH and still accelerating: shhh:

http://www.12v.org is about the best website for general info, although being a US based site, but it does not cover the Coupe specifically as the V6 Coupes were not sold in the USA.

    Cheers n

The 2.8 CQ replaced the 2.3 20v CQ around 1992. Both sold in very limited numbers, much less than the S2. I had similar issues when i brought my CQ20v into Ireland, it was the first one imported so it took a while for them to figure out what it was.

They are nice and rare alright... Unfortunately I have no idea on numbers for UK, ZA or anywhere else for that matter. You could probably find out by a nicely worded letter or email into Audi HQ - perhaps through an official owners club or whatever. The answer to your question will be sitting in a database somewhere in Germany - all you need is to find someone who is able to access it !!!

                production numbers...

I also had a 2.8E coupe quattro a 93 car, had it for three years and grudgingly sold it because my wife wanted me to get something newer. That was 3 years ago, regretted selling that car still.
as mentioned above, www.12v.org is a good single resource for these.

They are very thin on the ground here also... I moved house 4 years ago and the day i moved in parked on the drive, another coupe rolls up, same colour as mine (indigo blue) I asked what model it was. Another 2.8e quattro.. What's the odds of that! I used to see one other on a regular basis in the area also very clean. Under rated cars imho as the S2 was always the quicker but as a daily driver it was effortlessly smooth and literally nothing went wrong with it in 3 years.

Do hunt around for the right insurance, are there any brokers over there who will look for the right deal. Car clubs tend to be connected to good insurers for obscure models.

SilverSteve, thats a cracking looking car! 55k is nothing, there was a croatian lad on audifans with one on 700,000 kms!

I agree. Had mine for 9 years and still miss that lazy engine - for town driving I mainly used 2nd and 3rd or just 3rd!

I also still think it could gather speed over 100MPH just as fast as an S2 as I am not convinced that my S2 can do 100-150MPH any faster.

The major downside is of course tuning potential. Even with a free flowing inlet system and exhaust, I still doubt I had more than 190BHP. Chip tuning non turbo cars is good for 10-20 BHP so you would have to work damn hard to get above 200BHP without nitrous or forced induction (I think a few have now been supercharged).

                          Cheers n

Thanks for the links and refrences guys! Feedback informative and much appreciated .

Interesting to note that you also find the other models less common than the S2 abroad.

Paul, I'll definatey take up your Audi HQ suggetsion, I'll organise a Audi Club of South Africa letterhead. I'll let you guys know what develops.

Some lovely cars guys, thanks for the pics. Ja, love mine to bits. I'm the second owner and had it for a year now. The previous owner looked after her well, serviced regularly, etc, so even though she's lazy, she's still strong . And she still pulls looks! It appears the 2.8 here was badged as a 2.8E("E" standing for Einspritzung/Injection) . See attached image for our badge layout-differs to your 2.8 with quattro below.

As for Insurance I did go with Outsurance when I first got the car-they listed it as a S2 in the end. I'm in the process of switching to Indwe Insurance who offer special rates to Audi Club SA members-for about R150 less I'm getting a lot more . Again though, car is listed as an S2.
