I can vouch for standard RS2s pushing past the 160 mark, I've done it twice in two different cars, all on a private runway nearby of course.

One was badged up as a TDi, brilliant fun.

Don't know how accurate my speedo is but I've had my S6 Avant off the clocks in 6th at an old airfield.

            So what's redline...

My car is at the inlaws so I can't just go out and check the tacho. It's a 7,100 RPM redline maybe, not 7,200 like I said before. Anyway with stock wheels and tires I'm not sure you can get the car over seven without tail wind or going downhill. When I did it it was on autobahn north of Bregenz on the way up towards Ulm. There's a downhill there and it used to have no speed limit, maybe still does.

The RS2 could be ordered without a limiter when new. I have hit the scary limiter at 262km/h (gps) almost like it cut the ignition. Seen 292km/h on gps on car ordered without limiter. (chip+catback)

Hmm this certainly was not an option in the UK as my car was built to my special order. I also don't remember seeing it on the order variants for the continental spec cars which could be ordered with more options than the UK ones.
One of the big issues putting the RS2 into production was getting tyres capable of carrying the RS2 weight at speed on 17 inch rims with 7 inch width. No tyre in production was suitable so Audi commisioned Pirelli and then Dunlop to produce special purpose tyres capable of doing this. The Pirelli tyres never made it onto the production version whereas the Dunlop ones did. I seem to recall reading an interview in one of the car mags saying that the speed limiter was there to protect the tyres.

                      Rev limiter

The RS2 has a rev-limiter, I know that. I also know it can be hit in sixth gear on dry pavement, I did it once. I don't know about optional speed limiters, I sort of doubt it. I mean who in their right mind would mark that box?

Sorry by speed limiter I meant rev limiter. My point being that you could not AFAIK order an RS2 from the factory without rev limiter. As one (if not the only) owner on here who ordered their RS2 new in 1995, I tried to order many continental spec options on my special build RS2 - ordering one without a rev limiter was not on either the UK options list or the continental options list.

There is a speed limiter function in the ECU. When Mihnea mapped my car he first of all set the limiter to 30mph and asked me to accelerate. Funny man. I can tell you it works....

Fortunately, he offered to re-set it to a non limiting level, in this case 199mph.

My car is stock, I'm the original owner, but my wife's name is on the registration cuz it's in her country. The limiter is at redline in 6th. That was the point of this thread. My wife still wants me to sell the car....

"Ok" you accept what I'm telling you, that the car will go to redline in 6th gear but then something happens i.e. rev limiter kicks in?

FWIW speed limiter were a pretty new deal in 1995 when I got my car. Normally only used on big "top class" sedans.
