My 95' also had the metal pressure pipe, so it seems that it was only the 96 models that all had the plastic pipe.

My March 95 build does not have a metal pipe and checking on ETKA reveals the part number to be 034145683K which is the same for 94,95and 96 build years with no part substitution for a different part number. I think that the metal pipe is an aftermarket fitment.
As I said on rs246.com my car at 65K miles and in mint conditon has much less wear on the drivers seat so there is something odd about this.

Seems my off the cuff joke about a plastic pipe is getting more interest than 12hrs of trapsing thru five schematic binders to create the definitive relay list has gotten more attention. LOL...

I'm not so sure. I think it's OEM.

Another example, take the cross member. If you buy a new one today it has a plastic tube inside. Most older cars have a metal tube. Just cost cutting/weight reduction by Audi.

Plastic pipe is better than the metal, it isn't affected as much to heat soak under the bonnet which was the primary reason for the change according to Vagparts back in the day.

Off topic I know but I like that idea and to go even further, we need to get Rusty or Bo to make a pair of simple lightweight IC hangers from machined Ally and then use a plastic boost pipe That should remove a good few Kilos of weight at the worst point of the car (the nose)

                  Cheers n

Interesting. I know there are very few blue ones about with this few miles on it.

Yep, that sounds like a much better reason for the change.

id go with plastic doesn't rust and is cheaper to produce.

heatsoak at that airspeed is negligable. its about intercooler heatsoak when issues occur.

Remember the pipe is located directly above the exhaust manifold, no matter the airspeed with the temp of the manifold a metal pipe is going to absorb heat radiation.

This can be seen when you go to reverse inlet manifold the IAT temps drop significantly
