    Power

To all you experts out there please forgive my ignorance! I was wondering is it literally a simple as bolting on a bigger turbo and remapping the ECU to get a good increase in power on an S2 ABY?

depends what sort of power yours after:

    290ish - chip
    380ish - chip, injectors, turbo, manifold,downpipe
420ish - 2871r turbo, injectors, exhaust, manifold, remap, intercooler
400-450ish - 3071r turbo, injectors, exhaust, manifold, intercooler, rods
higher than that is definately rods and a few other items.

there's loads of threads on here detailing what stuff is needed at what levels, the above is just a guide, probably a few more bits but thats just a rough one. What power you after?

if you want more than 300bhp then a new turbo is the starting place, the rest is determined by what you're after, what turbo you use, who maps it and ultimately, how deep your pockets are...

To do things properly starts adding up really fast. You can do things in stages, like me, where you get all the external bolt-on parts first (IC, EM, exhaust, breather etc.), all with a view to a certain power figure.

Oh, and then there's the chassis and brake upgrades required to handle the extra speed... and the new sportier seats... and the bigger wheels with stickier tyres...

yes. thats the way i did it to start.

        you need.

        turbo
        manifold
        injectors
        remap.
fuel pump (id advise for 350+)
        3" system
the rest of the aby stock stuff will do 400hp.

add to this gauges for afr and egt. its always best to know.

to ellaborate i bought a stock aby.i fitted a boost controller. i bought a weagner tubular and vems. i already had a turbo. i had a 3" system made by quattronics and had the turbo fitted at the same time. i then mapped it on the stock pump and injectors. i then fitted injectors, skimmed pistons and fitted rods.i then fitted wagner inlet, ic and x member.

car went from stock to around 500hp with these changes.

with more hp you need to address brakes and chassis

One thing to add which andy touched on, before looking at power, do brakes and suspension/tyres first. Its all well and good turning up at the corner quicker than the other car but when you end up being another statistic for top gear

            Thanks guys for your inputs.

At the moment the car runs at 280bhp and drives beautifully. Ideally I would like about 350bhp however; I am in no rush for that at all, it will definately be in the long term. The car already has a 3" SS exhaust and BIG AP brakes with 17" wheels to accommodate them it also has an RS2 custom interior, it comes alive at 3500rpm. It is a different drive and power delivery to the RS2 I used to have. I drove a 350bhp RS2 when looking for one and it was a really nice drive that I liked a lot.

Given the option the car would deliver a bucket load of power at around 3250/3500rpm similar to the RS2, for me that is enough power for a road going car.

Sounds like you'd be happy with chipped rs2 power, it was designed for the il5, delivers the goods and don't break the bank so just go for that when the time comes. Atm just enjoy chipped power for as long as you can, it gets expensive after that.

How would I get to that Acidburn, fit and RS2 turbo and IC with a remap?

                      Don't forget chip or remap

Rs2 turbos are getting rare now in good condition, which is why the K26/K27 is also a good alternative.

There are other turbos such as the garrett, CT and Precision that will also be good but you need to spend more on them and you'll need new water and oil lines.

Looking back should have kept my K26/Garrett turbo and rs2 manifold but then what's done is done and another member has that setup.

When looking for an RS2 I drove a remapped car, my current S2 has been remapped by Minhea. When refering to fitting an RS2 turbo, I assumed my car would have to be mapped again to match it to the turbo.

Your driving factor here is going to be budget, Hoffer76 has two cheap options that don't need rod replacements, K26/K27 and a hybrid K24. Haven't driven them so can't comment but on paper look good.

I'm going to offer something different here, improve your current setup 1st, I'd be tempted to leave the turbo as it is fit a Wagner reverse inlet manifold and Intercooler.

Members like S2_Bo will tell you the difference even on a K24 car was very noticeable.
