I've noticed that the engine build date is sometimes a month or two after the Chassis build date. For example my CQ VIN is April 91, engine May 91, Audi's dealer system had my car listed as built in August 91. Date of first registration was Sept 1991. Seems the above date only applies to when the body was made and assigned a VIN number, not the actual build date of the car.

Can't refute your story but it must vary from situation to situation. The first 1996 MY ABY engines were built in May, starting on May 1, 1995 with ABY004622. The last 1996 MY ABY engine was built in September 1995, ending with ABY004891. So obviously cars built in Oct through Dec. 95 did not have to wait for engines to be built for them.

How do you determine when the engine is built?

My engine was built 28.02.95 (ABY 0004 492) and the car was first registered on 14.03.95 (ZSA 1797). As I know it was made to order,....owner wanted silver color, sunroof, rear el. glasses and wood in the interior.

How do you determine when the engine is built?

You first get the engine number off the block (IIRC, exhaust side, firewall end, where the head meets the block). Then you ask your friend Kate at the Audi Parts department (or wherever your friend Kate "works").
