I do feel that getting close to 230 BHP is doable with enough money thrown at the engine, it needs an experienced engine builder to play with the head and cams to optimise the top end of the engine and I suspect they aren't that far away from the factory anyway, the ports on the 7a head are lovely.

Then a decent inlet side with throttle bodies and lose the maf and any other constrictions and you'll be breaking well over 200 in my opinion, the inlet side is crap on these engines.

230bhp should be doable on a 2.3 7a (if you have the cash), copy the 2.0 16v competition engine from the 80/a4 and add a cylinder, they managed to make 295bhp one season and 305bhp another in the 90s.

There is an around 300bhp na 7a on motorgeek, think its a 2.5 or 2.6, again £££.

Club gti have a good thread on the audi 16v competition engines, good read to see how they solved the valve limitations etc.

That's for bhp and ftlbs and so, unsuprisingly power = torque @ 5250 RPM

Yes, I fully agree with your opinion regarding the placement of the motor inlet 7A.

Unfortunately the engine heat will heat the entire area of admission and cause excessively high temperatures Intake turn the air density becomes lower. So will be losing power which is what we want.

Making an air intake as S2 was a good start.

230bhp is the magic 100bhp per litre, the right intake and cam setup will get you there.

I have a press article somewhere published back in 88 that talks about the 20v engine before it was released. At the time they claimed it would have 190bhp, interesting part was the photo of cyl head which had the cams gear driven instead of the chain. I suspect it was a competition head lifted from one of the rally cars.

If you could get a 7A to rev like an S2, I'm sure it would be around 200 bhp. I'm not sure why the 7A doesn't rev. Intake, cams or the sHitachi management?
Mine felt good on cam between 4k and 6k, but I rarely made it to the rev limiter. It was never eager to make it there.
I sure with a few tweeks 230 could be do-able without too much trouble.

Your kidding right? 7A is a much revvier than its turbo cousins

Nope. It just wasn't keen on much over 6k. Not 7k+ like the S2. Maybe it was that crappy cast EM.

yup mine revs out lovely to 7200 with the tubular manifold and cone filter.
might get it on the dyno a some point seeing this new engine I've dropped in is in its prime.

I'd be interested to see a plot Alex.
I always wanted one of those lovely tubular EMs for my 7A, but couldn't find one.
When I first got the cq it would rev to an indicated 8600 rpm, but I found a loose multi-plug under the dash, fixed it and about 6300 was about all it would do.
I always loved the sound of the 7A.

I know it is not 230bhp but thought this info may be of interest in this discussion.

This info was taken from a magazine article someone sent me.
The RE2400 boosts displacement from 2309cc to 2366cc. This is acheived by opening up the cylinder bores from 82.5 to 83.5mm, the standard crankshaft being retained. The bores take forged autothermic pistons, the head is gas flowed with reshaped inlet ports, the inlet manifold is gas flowed and the valves are reshaped below their heads.

Keeping the standard crankshaft limits the extent of the displacement increae, Oettinglers use of a long stroke crankshaft gives an extra 160cc but the GTi Engineering route is less expensive

Cost of the RE2400 conversion was £3.350 plus VAT and the work took around 15 days to complete.

Considering that i just tuned a 1600cm3 8v LADA engine to 173HP@7600RPM im sure even 250-260 is doable on a 2.3 20V.Just have to find a crazy guy who puts extreme amout of money into a project like this.Titanium rods, huge cam, custom pistons, individual throttles, lightweight clutch, dogbox, electronic fuel injection with standalone engine management, and the list goes on.

                                7A tuning

                                Hey guys,

take a look at this site: http://www.20v-sauger-tuning.de/.
It is a very good site but in german only.
They cay give more power and reach the 7A engine up to 200hp +. But the engine displacement goes to 2.5 litres
                                Very impressive site
