After an S2 avant which would be...

the most complete and sensible choice between these two?

I'm trying to analise the following points:

    -reliability
    -performance
    -handling
    -future value
    -running costs

    RS4 B5
    (example pic)

    RS6 C5
    (example pic)

I'm more and more in love with the RS4, but a deal appeared on a RS6 by the same price, more recent with less miles on the clock...
And just for you to know, when I started the quest for a replacement for the S2 Avant, I was considering a M3 E46

      Thought about it...

Honestly at this moment its all about these two...

But still the M3 E46 is haunting me, the problem with it is that I have a 15 day old baby, and a 3 year old bigger brother, the M3 seems to be a bit complicated to live with...

      So enter the Avants

Either are nice cars but if you want something different you could try one of these

            I'd take RS4 because it's a proper manual.

RS4 for me (though you could say I'm biased!!!) The RS6 is without doubt a great car but somehow (to me) misses the point, in truth its to heavy and being a manual is not as sportier a drive as you would expect..

I think the RS4 will retain its value better (again possibly biased!!).

It really depends on the end use that you have in mind.... both are great cars but both are different...

The use would be like a daily driver, need to take the two kids to "Pre-K" and normaly do my 100Kms a day to work, almost 90% freeway with medium to non existant traffic...

Regularly on the weekends we take a trip of 700kms and have the normal lugage for 4 adults... 3 adults being my wife, and me and the kids represent the other one

The size of the RS6 is kind of a turn off, and the styling of the RS4 is something that I like a lot...
But on the other hand the size gives the RS6 that extra bit of versatility...

But will the RS4 have enough room for four, and lugage, will it be comfortable enough for some trips?

Cobra... well in your case I think that you don't have problem with money. because RS6 have a huge running cost, and rs4 too... just take a look how much cost OEM brake disc or pads ...

how much will you spend more money on services and fuel ?

If I were you. I would by urs6 avant 2.2 20vt ,and do 450 hp daily car , and if you spend the money on urs6 ,which you want to spend on rs6.. you will have monster sleeper car, with lots of space, 4 older person will sit inside with no problem, better fuel economy, fast car, less money will you spend on services..
my opinion is that c4 have nicer interior than c5 , manual gear box.. what are we talking about ?

and one question... why did you ask for our opinion which car to take? on s2forum where 95% people have 2.2 20vt engines..

I think that you don't want to buy this cars... you want 2.2 20v

Rs200, no problem, I doubt that I'll sell my S2, I'll try to keep it...
As we speak, my engine is being rebuilt "from head to toe" had a misfortune with it, and with some pressure from my wife I need to upgrade to something more contemporary and stylish (in her words)...

Regarding the running costs, my S2 avant isn't all that cheap to run aswell, hence enters the RS4...
The RS6 kind of scares me a bit on this subject, of the running costs.
I know the cost of the brakes are much higher, and a cambelt service will take ages, but still, I think its time to move to something with more creature comforts

I know that the forum is 90% I5, but there are a bunch of people that also have these two, so I think that someone will help!!!

Am a bit biased towards my vote, as I have an Avus B5 RS4 (as well as an S2).

On your question of space, obviously the RS6 will have more as it's substantially bigger.
The rear seating area of the RS4 isn't as big as the S2 avant, mainly down to the large seats containing the airbags. It's comfortable enough though. Rear load area is about the same as the S2 size wise.
Do your research before buying either. Go into a sale with your eyes open.
I had to replace all four camshafts and associated parts only 5 weeks after I bought mine, "but" in a way I'm glad it's done now as I'll not have to worry about.
Any problems with turbo's requires engine removal to access them, though engine removal is far easier than on an S2.
It is a far nicer car to drive fast over the S2. Smoother, more composed and more feedback from the steering.
I'll not be drawn into which is the better car between the S2 and the RS4, they are VERY different and each has it's good points.
If I had to do your journey of 700kms, I'd choose the RS4 over the S2 to do it in.

Try the same question the guys over on AudiSRS.com as the forum is predominately B5 RS4 and C5 RS6.
Good bunch of guys just like here

A proper SORTED RS6 takes some beating.... BUT it must be Sorted (Suspension & Gearbox)... Running costs are a FORTUNE & so is the Servicing... Just be warned!!

Always liked the RS4 but never owned one so its hard for me to comment!

Had an S4 Cab... Liked that but I took a major hit when I sold it!

Which ever of these 2 will be a superb car - Over a BMW!!!

                            Rs6, Rs4, Rs2

                            Driven all three...

In standard spec, all three, the RS6 will be the motorway machine... The RS4 will be the track machine.... And the RS2 will be the machine you'll keep forever.... On a fast 'B' road it's like cuddling a loved one on a roller coaster... It just does so much more 'right' without the weight or the power.
