  • what diffs are used in Audi rally and track cars

    Hi,

Does anyone have any information about what kind of differentials (rear, middle, front) Audi used on their rally and IMSA cars?

    Thanks!

the rally cars definitely used a lsd in the rear, IIRC a torsen unit. I'd imagine the IMSA used a plated lsd

Walter Rörhl describes in his book what they used over time. The S1 was fitted for testin purposes with LSD's from visco clutch producer Ferguson in '85. Walter owned the test car (#15) until recently, and is now in hands of Michael Gerber. It's the version which is 4cm longer to improve handling and fits the Porsche 962 PDK gearbox. AFAIK Gerber replaced the box by 'normal' one now.
On the non-tarmac stages they still used 100% locked center diffs to aid handling up to the end. If needed they fitted Gleason's TorSen diffs. Afterwards

..all 3 diffs were ferguson on the imsa..
the outer shell of all race gearboxes is the same on rally and road race cars, they obviously had different ratios!
