My cq's great for drifting. S2's a bit scarier though. I think weight's the problem. The S2 always fishtails 3 times, then threatens to go again. 3 fishtails are about my limit.
Actually, the S1 had a weight distribution very close to 50:50, so it was not really front-heavy. Also, it was mostly beaten by the space frame cars (T16, Metro et al) because it was not reliable. When the S1 was put head to head with the T16 at Pikes Peak it won easily. In fact, Audi did not need the S1 to beat the other Group B teams - it did so consistently with the old long-wheel-base A2 up to the end of the 84' season.
Jeez guys! lighten up. Reading some of these posts is outright pathetic. And for the record, i also think that if you don't like the S1 then you aren't an Audi enthusiast.
The S1 is an amazing car. Its the only Group B car that even resembles the Street Car Homologation that the rules dictate. The other manufacturer's didn't follow the rules at all, they were allowed to bypass the rules so that there'd be some competition. Showing a bunch of parts to the FIA and saying these will be the cars when we get around to making them>?!?!?! Audi is the only Group B competitor that actually made all their homologation cars!
Heard someone say the S1 isn't good because of some Engineering something or other. I don't know what to say about that. Maybe just this. The S1 and late model A2s can run around the track like that for along time and it won't even come close to the pounding of one special stage. Didn't you guys notice the people standing on the side of the track? They weren't watching the other Audis. They were all watching the S1. Thats the car they came to see and the driver was giving them the show.
absolutely - just playing to the crowd and flinging it about......i'd imagine he was more than capable of setting it up for proper tarmac use but it didn't look like that was the aim...exhibitionist in every sense
As for the S1 styling, it was the first major attempt at aerodynamics on a rally car but it was pretty angular. Actually it looked terrible but that wasnt the point, it was one of the most stable cars in the air at that time. Personally having stood on a couple of stages in the 84/85/86 season, there was NOTHING like a quattro/s1 blasting through a stage, or the 2 mins before when you can hear it popping and banging away....truely awesome.
- this has old material but also some new material driven by Stig B. - a pitty that the track is so slow for S1 to show the full power. Best part when S1 approaching and passing by the camera men. Sound is good, but not full blown DD or DTS. Also they again make the same mistake that speech and music spoils the real sound of engine. This probably the best S1 DVD and no speaker:
I like all the group B car's they are ****in' mental! These cars made me lose interest in so called sportscars forever! In some ways the Audi S1 is more like a WRC except for those stupid restrictors nowadays!
Still back then I would prefer a 205T16 E2 anyday! If you had seen Matti Alamaki in his 630 bhp beating anyone on the Rallycross tracks you know what I am talking about...
Still any MG Metro 6R4, RS200 E2, Audi S1 and even the ugly Lancia S4 can be delivered to my door...
t16 was driven by( nigel mansell i think ) on formula 1 track and he said it felt as fast as his formula 1 car . in fact it would have put him 6th on the grid for that particular race .
it took peugeot 6 years to beat s1's record and even then it was by point something of a second .s1 driver of the time recond to have made lots of mistakes and he said he could have taken at least 25 seconds of that record.
On a 10 minutes all or nothing race you can expect minor faults with every driver...
I have seen the group B evolving in Rallycross and the T16 did not need much development to be competive from the start.
RS200: transmission problems, massive power (in Schanche's at least!)
S1: quick right away but not the best handling car
6R4: needed more power (2.3-3.0 bi-turbo 2.5-3.8 atmo)
S4: not quick enough (that's why Alamaki traded it)
I think the way to go is 4wd with front mounted engine as far back as possible, like mordern Rallycross and WRC cars.
the main thing here is if it wasnt for audi then 4wd wouldnt be in rally cars or the cars u drive now.ok jensen did do the interseptor ff that was 4wd and the 1st sports car to have abs but,a audi 80,90,100,200,etc all fwd na wouldnt work would it.audi came up with quattro to kill everyone and did it,YES it did cos pug bought a quattro stripped it then said mmmm can we do this.rol on t16,rs200 was well different, lancia just watched, take off all the electronic **** on quattro now and its still the same as it was then.and also dont forget audi-5 pot the most perfik balanced engine in the world, why do i say this well-the best diesel is a 2stroke 5pot,volvo,ford etc all bought the 5pot why cos they cant do em right.volvo couldnt get running right.ford needed sommat that could be tuned,u may say 4pot cossie but its abit old.think is audi have been there n got the t-shirt.

oh and a polo for work.
A bit old they might be, but there are so many developments available these days that they well in this millenium. Thanks to Rallycross / WRC / Tuner wars there is a massive spec available like air injector, egr anti-lag, normal anti-lag, active diffs, skyline boxes, cobra boxes, 10,5 inch diffs, nikasil liners, siemens injectors. Anything you need to get you over 400 bhp or 400 Nm per liter!
ya but audi have been doin it for years, nikasil liners bmw did that in early 1990s ******ed engine they did a recall.over 400bhp in a cossie is like "oooohhhh" in a audi its mmmmmm, still good for more.if you have had a cossie and a audi u would pick audi any day.sorry good rant over now lets just face it ford or jap crap companys didnt get our money audi did
