Question, wouldn't different rubber size affect the central diff?

It would if the diameter of the front and rear tires was out by too much. IIRC, the tolerance is something less than 4% difference (but don't quote me).

      225/50/16 = 24.86 inches diameter

      235/40/17 = 24.40 inches diameter (98.15% of baseline)

      255/35/17 = 24.03 inches diameter (96.67% of baseline, but 98.48% of the 235/40/17)

      etc.

This was parked outside MTM when I visited in 2000. Shows the arch extensions quite well.

The extended arches look a bit agricultural there, it's sporting a standard bumper too rather the MTM styled one.
Any idea why the registration plate is sitting at an odd angle? I'm guessing the plate can lifted off to expose the IC.

I don't quite like the arches... is it just me?

I'm still not convinced about the gains with big wheels and tyres anymore, the quattro system really doesn't benefit from over tyred or over gripped set-ups.... The MTM Sport quattro setups from the 1990's made 428bhp, give or take, that's just over 100bhp per wheel, which isn't too mad. Which can be easily accommodated under standard arches.... So why the agricultural flares?

                  No way is that this:

245s fit well under stock fenders, I think 255s could just fit with slight mods. Larger would take modifying the steering arms / fenders...

Can't be, the RSR was announced in a magazine in 94/95 right?
