    S2 insurance quote ??

Right lads.. I've just upset myself even more ... My 2.3 NG at the beginning of the year in total was costing me £900 fully comp, as I am only 20 still .. I've just switched to a 93 2.6 auto and that (with the same company) is £820 fully comp ?? ... As a joke I decided to see what a 3b S2 would cost me ... £515 fully comp???? How does this make any sense ? And realistically is it worth me saving for a 3B ? As I'm sure they will be cheaper than an ABY ? Or do I save that bit more and go for an ABY ? I've heard the ABY's are smoother and torquier? But I want something that's a bit more lively ? A 3B ?

Don't know why I wind myself up ...

less on the road so less in insurance claims.

both good cars, just go for what your budget can afford tbh.

Having bought an S2 (3B) for a little over £2k, it's not something I'd do again. As has been said many times, buy the best you can afford. For the amount I've spent keeping mine on the road I could have bought a mint late model.

This is especially true of the 3B with its subtle differences. Get used to seeing 'NLA' a lot....

A £400 saving on insurance is throw away cash on these cars, IMO. If you think that's big money then you might not be prepared to own/run one. Sorry if that sounds patronising.

Sidrick makes a very good point IMO. Spend as much as you can afford on the most straight, well cared for example you can find, preferably from a caring forum member or someone who knows what they are doing. A £2k S2 is likely to need alot of work, could well have tatty interior, bodywork, rusted subframes not to mention all manner of other problems. Far better off spending £4k+ and ruling out re-sprays and major work for as long as possible.

Both 3b's and ABY's have pros and cons. Just buy the best you can afford. Aged 20, I would suggest sticking with Coupe for a while. S2 could be a money pit, especially if you are intending to use it daily.

As above, false economy to buy a cheap car as a daily - they are at the age now where the cheap ones are all restoration projects.
I would bide your time and save your cash and wait for a nice forum members car to come up for sale that has been well looked after.
Be prepared to spend some time and money sorting out a cheaper car. My 2c

As far as price goes good S2 Coupes are so thin on the ground now that IMO there's little difference in price between a truly good 3B and a comparable ABY these days. It used to be the case that one would have half a dozen OK cars to choose from on the likes of piston heads with the odd reasonable gamble popping up on eBay. Sure you do see the occasional one but they've become increasingly scarce over the past year or so, to the point where now there are often none advertised for sale apart from on here. The only real bargain I've seen for the past couple of years was Jon's Red 3B that sold some months ago, however I think that ended up selling for more than the asking price.

Unless you've got luck like Tiger Woods don't expect to pick a serviceable S2 for 2K, anything around that sort of price is going to need a fair amount of work and may even only be fit for breaking. Cheap S2's have to be one of biggest false economy's car wise that I can think of, certainly in the sub 10K price bracket. My car cost 3K 6 years ago and at the time was one of the cheaper cars around, in one way I was very lucky as it had had a lot of money spent on it's chassis and engine but it still needed an instant injection of £500+ to make it driveable daily and that's just on parts as I do all my work myself having good mechanical knowledge. Ultimately I've had to take the whole thing apart and put it back together again (properly) to bring it up to a decent standard, I don't know what this has cost as I don't like to think about it but I would have been considerably better off spending 5-6K at the time.

Not trying to put you off or be patronizing, just offering advised based on 6 years of ownership of which the car has only been on the road a year.

Good advice. I think the salient point here is that a £2k S2 is probably not a very realistic prospect as daily driver

Nice use of "salient" Alex. Hugely underused word. A friend of mine was recently saying how the word "exponent" is never used apart from to describe Jimmy Anderson's ability to swing the cricket ball around corners.

Yeah, they are dirt cheap to insure, my 80 tdi is double the S2 to insure

I didnt get any difference in insurance between 3B and aby coupes when I had both. (except mods)

Only thing I would say is you could buy a good S2 for £4k, and still need to spend another few thousand on maintenance. A lot of the cheap ones now have rust on the rear arches, which is £££ to fix properly.

I would personally buy the car with the best shell and engine/box, and then just budget to refurb/replace everything else.

Also depends where your skills are with mechanics, bodywork or if you are paying somebody else.

Thanks for all the input guys, certainly assumed that they were money pits ! I certainly would think twice about a sub 4k S2, my main goal is to have one before me old man does ! Will keep saving and stick with me coupes at the mo. I should stand to make a few bucks when it comes the time to sell the white one, and I have a local guy coming to potentially buy my NG on Monday. Put the money in a pot and keep saving !

                        Thanks again people
