Audi lose their way (as usual)

So gone is the concept with the short wheelbase, lightweight chassis with I5.
In steps a stupid lardy hydrid system mated to a V8 and weighing in a bit under 2 tons.

I know! i saw this a while back.
I was super excited about the original "white" concept.
But this is just a massive kick in the teeth too the enthusiasts. Fair enough make a v8 hybrid concept, but dont *******ise and tarnish what was the most awesome concept for a shorty remake...
The most upsetting thing about it is the fact that they made virtually production ready versions of the "white" concept and let all the magazines road test it. They then claimed they would never make it to production! But the fact they've fudged about with it means that the "white" concept will 100% never make it into production, and therefore a varation of the "shorty" theme probably never will in the future either....

Who was it coined my favourite phrase on this - "LED headlights do not a classic make" - but it is sure to get the attention of the well heeled bling brigade who will undoubtedly justify it partially as eco friendly cos they threw a bunch of batteries in the boot.

              These are old news.
They've announced a few weeks ago that they will keep the I5 after all.

It's like vajazzling a fat bird to take your attention away from what's in front of you.

What the world needs is a manufacturer to say 'this is balls' and build lightweight, agile and properly handling driver's cars that are balanced and can be enjoyed at legal speeds. I have a lot of respect for Toyota and Subaru making the AE86 and BRZ to this mantra, even if they are then criticised for making a car with not enough power

Why do most of us hanker after cars from the 60s, 70 or 80s? Because they were made with modest power, low grip and light weight.

Gee. I don't think they lost there way if they found 700 hp for a vehicle that light. All the other "kids" (e.g. Porsche are going hybrid with massive hps so it is not surprising that Audi would also investigate the concept).

Admit it, if you had the opportunity to drive (or own one), you wouldn't turn it down on the grounds that it doesn't have a 20V turbo I-5.

That the concept isnt terrible. And it has the potential to be fairly exciting. It just doesn't appeal to me and pull on my heart-strings anywhere near as much as the "white" concept. Thats why i said "sure... make a v8 hybrid concept, just dont B4574RDised the original concept" which was AWESOME!!!

PMSL at that one Rusty… moist excellent but you make a very valid point - hey this argument has been raging on here for years !

I don't think Audi has the balls to build the uber special car that you describe - the marketplace wants such toys to be bristling with all sorts of trinkets and have an 'eco' angle to align with emissions… This all adds weight, increases complexity and reduces driver involvement on every possible level.

The closest thing to what you describe would be much more of a purists car that is sadly (I expect) only desired by a small percentage of the target marketplace for a new Sporty Audi. The well heeled gentleman (or gentle lady) looking to buy such a premium vehicle will not be happy if all their Facebook friends have SatNav, electric Recaros, park assist, esp, TV on board, 4 inch thick noise insulation, climate control, flappy paddle ball bag, nineteen airbags more power and/or less emissions, 27inch alloys etc etc

For my money - if you took that compact chassis and stripped out all the 'toys' to get the weight down and powered it with special version of the 2.5 TTRS motor and ran it through good old Torsen quattro with rear bias and make the steering feel nice and sharp we would be on the way… Maybe add options for super light wheels, adjustable dampers & ARBs for folk to adjust to taste. Get the overall weight down to somewhere around 1100kg and the need for monstrous brakes is reduced too. 100bhp per corner with fat/flat torque spread on a modern, stiff, light chassis and you are on the way.
