1.8t with a half decent turbo on it. mine stands me far less than the cost of a 5cylinder 20vt and 275bhp 310ftlb

I certainly don't have the budget for a V10 at the moment ! Lol

Keep getting badgered by my "jap" friends that I should stick an SR20DET in it, 2.0 turbo from an s14 Silvia .. Same sort of price as an s2 lump though .. Ideally if I was going to go 20vt I would literally just drop the engine in. Not after an s2 sedan rep, just a very quick saloon that makes a nice sound and goes "TOOOOSHHHH" occasionally

The v10 will need a mod engine hood, something like spq one, maibe little taller. Also brake pump/servo will get no space and a tilton/wilwood inside pedal plate will need to be mounted. The 01a/01e gbox have only 4 mounting points common on engine block and a thin adapter plate should be done.

Thinking a little out of the box so to speak but what about a VR6 of some sort? Not that easy but different.

An I5 20V turbo really makes the most sense though.

The £4K I quoted was a working budget to get a whole doner car and any new parts required along the way to do a proper job, a lot of this could be recouped by selling unwanted parts off. As Bogdan says you don't strictly need a whole car unless your trying to build an S2 Saloon replica, if you only used the parts you need to install the engine and not bother with five lug hubs etc you could get a lot of money back from breaking the doner.

I would move earth, fire and water to put a v8 in it .. What though ? What v8 will fit, with minimal effort, link up to say a Quattro box, and would be cheaper than buying an 3B or ABY ?

A thought .. But ideally just want running and known quantity to drop straight in with minimal effort haha .. What other engines would people suggest ? I'll turn this into a "which engine" thread .. What copied be easy ? More powerfully than the ABC ... Etc etc

That should be the way in case of a sedan s2 replica. But if user wants just a 2.2 turbo engine on his car no need to buy an s2,just engine is ok.If he buys an s2 he will have an s2
So if $$$$$$ is available sedan+aby avant will be the way to a rare car. Will get o1e gearbox, management etc.But is the budget so big?Members here sell cars with almost new prep engines 400 hp,at lower price that only engine and mods eated....

As engines out of cars on a pallet good ones are worth roughly the same with perhaps a slight premium on ABY units. A knackered 3B S2 or URS4 would probably be the cheapest source vehicle, but an S2 Avant would have better parts compatibility with a B4 saloon, the rear end in particular, and would be my first choice for what you want to do.

Thanks for the input chaps .. Know what I'm heading towards now atleast. Is there much price difference between a 3b motor and an ABY ? In terms of just engine and bits ?

Actually the dissy ignition is very reliable up to chipped RS2 power levels and is cheaper to maintain, granted the ABY coil pack set up is more advanced and technically superior, simple's, however when all the components are getting on for 20 years old it's not so hot. One thing ABY's really do have in their favor is a latter version of Motronic with better software options, there again 3B ECU's come socketed as do some early AAN's I believe.

So as has been said you want a good strong motor and ancillary's not a number and the best way by a mile is to get a complete running car, preferably something beyond economical repair for one reason or another as the doners your looking at are all rare cars.

I would want a minimum of £4K sat in the bank with project written on it.
