I think I need to buy an S2

    I'm having a bit of a dilema - I think I might need to buy an S2.
As my coupe project is getting towards a semblance of "completion" I've been taking a look at the bodywork that needs doing to bring it up to scratch and I'm not sure I can justify the work or expense to do it on what is essentially "only" a CQ

To get the car to the standard I want it, I need two new sills, take the windscreen out to sort some rust on the roofline, and paint from the front wings back. I don't really have the space to DIY paint or the time to be honest and a pro job costs big bucks which I don't have..... so I'm wondering whether I should just buy an S2 with tidy bodywork and break it, sell the bits to recoup the majority of the cost and swap all of the parts off my car into it and sell the rest

It would be a real shame to weigh in my shell though after the countless hours spent under it, BUT S2s are getting thin on the ground as it is and prices are on the rise for good ones, the same can't be said for CQs unfortunately.

Am I just going demented or does that make sense to anyone else?

Buy one before they run out. My only criteria for my current house search is a garage to put the s2 in

and a prices for s2 are 3 times more for a real one..

Sounds like a good idea to me , definitely more viable financially if you can find one which doesn't need any body work

It does make sense Alex, I'd be thinking along the same line's.

Similar thing applies to my G60 MK2, if the charger or engine goes pop I'll be putting an original 8V motor back in and breaking the G60 lump. It will probably get a stock motor again at some point regardless, originality is always worth more.

              You re too fussy man!
Finish what you ve got after all the work you ve done a bit more wont hurt you.
Would you ever sell it when it's finished just because it doesn't say s2 on the log book?
Won't go any faster because the name is different will it?
I wanted a ur but couldn't afford one at the time so did a cq as you know.
It still does the same job-although not for a while.
I keep threatening to sell mine but the mrs persuades me to keep it.
I could have kept the ur, s2 coupe, s4 or the recent s2 avants I ve had but they weren't 'my' car because I hadn't put hours in them.
Think carefully friend before you decide.

Leave the bodywork and enjoy the ride until an S2 opportunity turns up.

Finish the car. Drive it. Enjoy it

Who cares if it's not a 'real' S2? The only time it will matter is if you ever sell it, and I presume it's a keeper?

Don't get me wrong I'm not about to start taking the bits off mine just yet
But it will need several thousand quids worth of bodywork some time in the near future and to me it would be money down the drain, where-as the same money spent on an S2 is an "investment". I can foresee in the non-too-distant future S2s being correctly valued upwards of £10k and having missed the opportunity to own one of my all-time favourite cars, as I did with an Integrale Evo some years ago- who knows what the future holds I might loose my legs one day and have to sell up.
Anyhoo I have eyes peeled and if anyone knows of a really nice car or shell that needs a new home, I might be interested

Get an S2 shell, get it acid dipped and E coated, do most of the prep your self (primer can be sprayed outdoors if you pick your day) then get a proper body shop to do the final coats.

You could take as long as you wanted to complete this process as your car is already built and then swap it all over at your leisure.

Do yours up over time spread out the cost as CQ are very rare also and in the meantime look for for S2 and before values start shooting up as they are already I've had my S2 for 14 years and it's going absolutely no where. I had my S2 restored 7 years ago to show winning standard and cost £1k by a genius that I know and would recommend to anyone and he's doing mine again either back end of this year or early next year. For me S2s are addictive and I love every time I get into mine just the thrill and the amount of admiring glances they get which am sure many others will back me on that. Good luck whatever you decide to do but don't go breaking an S2 lol

I meant breaking as in selling off the bits I don't need that I've already got.
I would never break an S2 unless written off!

It makes sense the mere fact you've come to the realisation so far down the path is indication you should do it.
