  • Swb quattro with rs3 running gear

    Morning.
I was going to buy a nearly new audi tt rs 2.5 but after just the worst customer service decided not to buy. It came to me that my dream car would be a shorty quattro so I want to put it out there about doing a swb quattro with rs3 or ttrs engine, gearbox and virtual cockpit.
I wanted to ask what rs model is longitudinal engine with dsg gearbox and without haldex?
I know this is not going to be a cheap conversion. I'm suffering ptsd from audi
I need the swb body kit, donner car and old quattro. Think it'd be a great car when finished.

Any thoughts or input would be appreciated

Yes that engine is from 07K family as far as I recall. The fun with this will be sourcing suitable gearbox for longitudinal application - especially if you are thinking about DSG options but I dare say Mr Tonks will have prior knowledge.

The biggest concern I would have for DSG on such a conversion will be need for factory ECU as well and that brings dependency on factory IMMO, ABS, ESP and god knows how many other controllers. This would need an expert to map out all the various dependencies on the factory ECU.

If it was me - I would go aftermarket / stand-alone ECU on the engine and get a good manual gearbox bolted on - like B7 RS4 - somebody must have done that before.

Thanks for this .I'm looking for a badly damaged car with longitudinal engine. Think it'd be a good conversion But like you say coding out/ in would be a pain. What car has a 2.5 longitudinal engine with dsg that's a true quattro and not the crappy haldex Emailed Mr Tonks Found a wr quattro so just need the donner car... And a large wallet.

I don't think the TTRS engine appears on any longitudinal application from the factory. Others have converted the 07K motors into "proper" quattro applications with longitudinal Torsen gearbox. Oh and yeah deep pockets for this project will be needed.

Any ideas on the 07k in the longitudinal direction? Dsg would be great but I think for installing, would be difficult and expensive Plus if if I want virtual cockpit too. Cha ching! Be awesome though

Like I said - others have done 07K longitudinally - search the forum for 07K. As for DSG and virtual cockpit, then you could be wishing a step too far - its probably all possible if you have deep enough pockets and can find the right specialists to make all the OE controllers play nicely with each other outside of the chassis they expect to be fitted to !

Spoke with Mr Tonks Great man great help. I need a gt coupe and type 85 and the 07k is not a proven engine. Hamish is doing the 07k conversion. So I shouldn't have sold my grey 90 with the Aby conversion.
I'll have to have a think because my fabrication skills are not good enough to do this project. Thanks for all the help. Much appreciated Jay

I disagree. I think the 07k is proven. They are capable of 400bhp on standard internals, 600bhp with just pistons/rods on cast crank and with forge cranks they are good for 1200bhp+ .... just look up castlesystems mk3 golf fwd drag car. They out flow the old inline 20v engine in standard form, then add oversized valves and you’ll out flow them by about 20-30%. They have vvt on the inlet valve, but I know people looking to retro fit vvt on the exhaust side. You could jump straight to a TTRS direct injection engine which has its benefits as designed for a turbo setup so has forge crank already, larger water pump housing, oil and water lines inlets/outlets are at the rear of the engine, then the head breaths better again over the 07k... but you’d be lucky to find an engine for less than 6-10k and the direct injection needs controlling so you’ll need a syvecs pnp or similar to run it... personally 07k makes more sense as it’s effectively the same engine but more cost effective and I believe it’s now proven..

Answering the original post... the VAG stables may no longer have the answers for an up to date strong 4wd system... I don’t see the point on spending a fortune on old ur/s2 running gear unless you are building your swb as a perfect replica to sell on. Instead why wouldn’t one make it look like a swb under the bonnet but perhaps move the engine back a little and use modern running gear.. I’m sure loads would disagree.
