  • Audi urquattro with 20v AAN wiring problem

    Hello,

As the title implies im having a bit of an headache with my wiring. Its an 1983 Audi Quattro with a AAN engine. Ive got the engine bay covered but im really confused what to do with the rest in the passenger comp. What is needed to make everything work? A long answer i suppose but in general. Im tearing my hair apart in the garage right now.

    Ty for any help

Have you run the cables through to roughly the same locations as on an s4/s6? Have you got pictures of where you ar up to so far? Are you using the whole loom or splicing in just the engine related sensors and drivers?

      1983 Quattro,
      Left or right hand drive?
And early or late fusebox ?

You will need to tie into the fusebox to get access to some things.

I did it before with help from Paul ,
You need minimal connections (6) to make it run , power , ground , switched 12V, but also many more for after run pump, gauges ETC.

With the AAN harness in LHD car I had everything bunched up below the dash in the passenger compartment where the AC used to be. With that setup there’s quite a bit of wire that gets bunched up

afterthought Ty for the reply. Its a left hand drive 1983 im guessing late fusebox. I have the digital display, AC etc.

The problem im having is not in the engine bay, its the fusebox and how to get everything right there.

Im guessing i have to compare wiring diagrams from my Quattro and the AAN? Problem is i couldnt find the fuseboxes diagrams for both cars. I found a thread in here a long time ago with great pictures showing how. But I think its gone now :/

Check out s2central.net,plenty of info on wiring colours, relays etc.
your aan loom shouldn't be too dissimilar to aby/adu loom
          It's a love/hate relationship with the S2,i love it,it hates me

I don’t know how it over there but here in the US model UrQuattro we had two style , 1982 and early 1983, then in late 1983-1985 they were different so 83 was a split year for us .
The under dash fusebox was what came in the early models , the late one is under the hood in the rain tray. I only have done underhood. To fuse AAN harness into 4000, coupe quattro, ur quattro.

You want to compare diagrams and look at how the fuel pump relay is wired , it’s kind of odd (to me at least)
When it sees cranking RPM the AAN ECU tells the fuel pump relay when to turn on.. It does this by using a switched GND wire that comes from the ECU to the fuel pump relay to turn the relay on and off. Which powers the fuel pump, injectors and some other things.

You can find the proper pins that coincide with the diagrams on the bottom of the fuse panel. When it is wired in correctly you can take the AAN fuel pump relay (4D0 951 253 B) and place this in the spot on the fusebox where you urq one was and if configured right it will work properly.

My Urq had an underdash fusebox (1982 'C' model) and I had to invent all new connections when splicing it all in. I ended up re-purposing a couple of the relays above the dash panel (e.g. fuel pump) to power the various AAN components. It is not hard but you have to work step by step. Plus, I found the AAN PDF _invaluable_ to understand that part of the harness, along with the Bentley for my Urquattro wiring.

There are also some excellent posts on Quattroworld, particularly by Urs4boy, but a lot of the useful picture links seem to be messed up of late for me. However, I can right click on the broken link and open the image in another tab and it works...you can often find the pics as many are hosted on 12v.org. Here the first link is the C4 FAQ with a lot of great pointers. The second is one such example specific to the AAN ECU. The third and 4th are actually pictures from the 2nd link.
