  • Taking a RHD UK car to Sweden help please.

A mate of mine is moving to Stockholm next week for probably years. He is looking to buy a UK registered car and drive it over to use as his daily drive. I thought that this is a nice idea in principle but after x months the Swedish authorities will force him to register the car and this would be a huge headache. His arguement is that cars are cheaper here and he knows the market and language so buying here is his best option.

Are there any Swedish members who know the law? Or any Swedish members who know of a good S4 or similar he could buy on arrival?

    Many thanks.

It all depends on his luck, he could probobly drive around here for years on UK plates without any hassle, but if he knows he will be living here for years it would probobly be better he buys a car over here. Yes the cars are alot cheaper over there than here so he has got a point there. Alot of Polish and Ukraine people come over here to pick berrys in the autumn for a few months, and a few of them stay for years and drive around on there Polish nrplates. His problem will be the swedis MOT. Either he has to import his UK car to sweden and get swedish nrplates/lights and all that or he will have to drive around without MOT. Another thing is that in the winter it´s mandatory to have winter tyres. Any more questions just ask.

To be honest, getting the car on to swedish plates shouldnt be to much of a hassle... Get him to read this http://transportstyrelsen.se/en/road...ion-of-origin/

Haha, funnily enough he couldn't be convinced to buy an Audi and ended up buying a C32 AMG estate! So if you see another UK reg C32 around Stockholm give him a thumbs up too!

I'd be giving myself the thumbs up

Only one UK reg C32 in Stockholm. Found your thread when googling how long I can drive my car on a UK reg.

Haha, I should have known that there couldn't be anyone else that would buy a C32 AMG to take to Sweden, a land of ice and snow!

I see they drift quite nicely though! :mischeif:

                      1. You don't need MOT. MOT is only to drive in the UK, so forget MOT. You don't need tax either.
                      2. You will need to have insurance, minimum 3rd party.
                      3. Because of how the EU is, they can't really prove anything about when you came into the country, so don't do completely stupid stuff (like doing 150 through speed cameras), and you should be fine.

I've done this 3 times in the past, now on my 4th import and I've hit a brick wall. If the car is less than 3 years old you will need to pay the Swedish MOMs (VAT). The car cannot be modified in anyway (this is the problem I have now). You must have the V5 (original not photocopy). Export part of the V5 must be filled in and sent back to the DVLA.
The Swedish re-reg process consists of the following: Car is weighed, check all paperwork (chassis numbers match etc), MOT test. V5 is taken away from you. IF the car passes you are issued with a Swedish reg papers, Swedish MOT cert. and a set of plates. Cost is about £160.
You must fit a set of Euro driving headlights, beam benders are not good enough and will not pass the MOT.

Hi - and thanks for this advice! Did you have to get much else modified to get the car registered here? E.g. my speedometer only reads in MPH (on the clocks), but has a permanent digital readout of KPH. Would I need to get the clocks changed?
I’m going to need to register here within the next 3 months as my insurance will be invalid after this point – and foreign cover specialists are quoting me silly numbers!

                          Thanks,

                          James
