I would recommend LED for normal TV, plasma for home theatre TV, but most importantly get a decent (1000w) surround sound system as it transforms movies...
LG do a very nice 3D smart TV LED 47" for £650, which might be worth pushing the boat out for
Don't go for the sound bar options that the shops peddle...
Same here Mines around 8 months old LED backlight, Smart etc
My only gripe is on my model (sub £500,40") you do not get proper full Internet access to surf but silly apps !
Wish I had found this out before spending a further £50 for the dongle
For what this cost me so far I could have bought an S2

second that, but not only for movies, but everything that has sound with it, 99% of the speakers in flat TVs are crap. so keep some of the budget for a decent set of speakers. btw: there is no relation what so ever between sound quality and the power rating the marketing department puts on the box if you want to keep the budget low, start with a Logitech 2.1 PC set (e.g. the Z313, a mate just bought these, of course no B&W SQ, but a hard to beat price/performance ratio)
I would personally go for a samsung.I have a UE55D7000 and it is the dogs danglies tbh.It has a few gripes like a bit of torch lighting in the corners, but in HD it is superb.I did loads of research online before I bought mine, looking at loads of reviews.Tech-rader is a good site to get an idea of what to buy.All modern tellys have issues is some shape or form.It is best to avoid forums discussing the pros and cons of each tv because it will do your head in.I am sure both your choices wont dissapoint they are all pretty good nowadays.
I would buy from john lewis because unlike some other retailers their customer service is very good, just in the unlikey event something goes wrong.

IMHO get a TV with a remote control. It saves sending the missus over to it every time the adds come on. This increases the opportunity during the adds for some nookie, especially if you're watching ITV.
