Claiming of the council for pot hole damage

Anyone had experience of doing this as I am about to try and get compensation for damage caused by what I believe to have been caused by a pot hole

That's very true as before I hit the pot hole the car was fine and immediately after it all went wrong

        any wittnesses?

over here it is only possible if you stop at the scene and have a police report made up

First you need to check to see if the pothole had been reported to the council. You can check on fixmystreet.com to see if it has. If it has, get an estimate for the repair and contact the Council and speak to the claims department. They should explain how to claim.
If its not been reported, its unlikely you will be successful as apparently they only become liable after someone has reported it to them . Still worth a go though.

Make sure the pothole was reported and check when it was reported to the council. Get pictures of location and damage.

Send them the invoice for the damage, the council site will normally have info on how to pursue. if they ignore you take them to the small claims court using moneyclaim, i used this a few years ago against westminster council after a parking fine and appel failed and i took them to the Parking and Traffic Appeals Service and it was upheld as being invalid.

Stick a ruler in the pothole and take an up close picture, and a few others , and send it to the council with your claim, at least that's the way it works over here
