  • Rear diff lock issues S2 3B

    Hi all

Ive finally got round to putting my rear diff vacuum actuator back together after sourcing the cover it bolts too, prior to me getting car its been disconnected along with electrical feed that goes into back of diff.

Once connected up the green light next to diff lock button goes green instantly along with abs light ,cannot get green light to go off with diff lock on/off button ,the only way is to unplug electrical feed at the back of diff, then abs light also cancels too ,when pressing on/off within the car, the vacuum actuator stays in same position .

Ive also noticed now on full lock as im turning into driveway the rear wheel keeps locking and unlocking really quickly on either lock, im going to disconnect the vacuum hoses again to see it reverts back to how it was before .

    Any advice please guys

Sounds to me like the mechanism is locking when you press the button but it doesn't unlock.

The way the system works is that the controller determines whether to apply vacuum (from the little storage bottle if engine is not running) to the yellow hose or the blue hose going to the locking mechanism on the rear diff.

I forget which way round things go - wether blue hose locks or unlocks - you can use a hand vacuum pump to test the mechanism on the diff.

You can of course just pull the locking link rod out of the rear diff to emulate the actuator.

I have seen the plastic body of the actuators cracked before now - it needs to be airtight - so does both blue and yellow hoses from the controller.

When the car goes above 15mph (ish) the diff lock controller is supposed to turn the lock off to prevent wheel skip.

A locked rear diff is only to help get you moving out of deep mud or snow.

Also forgot to add - the electrical connection on the rear diff is just a switch which reports the position of the locking mechanism to the controller.

That explains why the back wheels are skipping when turning as diff is still locked on

how would I go about unlocking diff manually if possible
