If so think oil contamination from K&N filter and clean as planned.

If doing this before switch then the usual culprits come to mind as listed above with boost leak top of list to check ( with attention to MAF/airbox connection if problems after fitting)
Lambda does not always fault code and would be worth doing if not done before. IIRC should not cause problems with WOT @5k.
Finally DV have a finite life but usually tell you if they are dead with telltale noise.

Must admit that having played around with K&N on my S2 I would always recommend sticking with OEM and change 1-2/year depending on how much city driving you do.
I just got a K&N Drop-in flat panel so hopefully this http://www.knfilters.com/MAF/massair.htm is fact. Seems like K&N stands by their product and is willing to put money on it......

    Any comments?

I believe them, ran a K&N panel filter in my S2 for over 30k miles. "Never" had to clean the maf and never had a maf problem. Cleaned with K&N cleaner and oiled with K&N oil.

Currently running the OEM paper as so many have said it's better, but if it is I can't tell any difference.
Hence I'll be going back to the K&N when the paper one is dead.

Just an urban myth, well in my experience.

Been running K&N cone filters on the S2 and A3 1.8T for about 3 years. The A3 has done about 50k miles on one with out any apparent trouble.

likewise ran a k&n cone for years without oil issues etc. Only changed because of poor pickup after sitting in traffic. If i could find a better way to isolate/insulate from radiant heat then i'd go back to one but i think an ABY or RS2 airbox might be the next step instead...

I think its an urban myth if you are careful with the oiling. Not all are hence OEM as a general recommendation. In addition can you tell the difference with the K&N as the only real point would be if there was a performance gain we could notice.

Only difference I can tell between the K&N panel filter and an OEM paper filter, is a slight increase in the noise of the TBV. A little louder of a "sigh" on lift off.
Performance wise, no difference either way. If there is, it's way to little to notice.
I know an OEM paper filter is only ÂŁ6 or so, but I have the K&N and it'll only cost me the time I take to clean it once every 5k miles (do it the same time as oil change)

One thing not touched on is, is the K&N as good at filtering?
Not sure how long you ran the K&N in the S2 for Alastair, but after 30k odd miles of my own plus what you did, if it was that bad at filtering I'd expect I'd have seen some sort of detrimental effect by now, which I certainly haven't.

              All food for thought.
