Still looking and hoping to find a gearbox to fit my 1990 QC 2.3 20v 7a engine (170hp) have been offered a gearbox from an S2, a six speed. can anyone tell me if this would fit, will it bolt up and are the gear ratios close so many questions could really use some help. just don't want to take my car off the road just want to drop one out and another one in along with a new clutch of course
QC gearbox.

it will bolt on but you need to shorten a probshaft.. get a 5 speed gearbox with a final ratio 4.11 from audi 80 quattro and that it.Still looking and hoping to find a gearbox to fit my 1990 QC 2.3 20v 7a engine (170hp) have been offered a gearbox from an S2, a six speed. can anyone tell me if this would fit, will it bolt up and are the gear ratios close so many questions could really use some help. just don't want to take my car off the road just want to drop one out and another one in along with a new clutch of course -
Are you looking to rebuild the box you get before putting it on the car? I favour this approach of refurb a spare before swapping over and back on the road again in a day or two.
I do think rebuild is wise having fallen foul of getting a spare and on fitting it found it was also noisy. Less noisy than the outgoing one but noisy none the less.
I doubt there are many good boxes left out there these days as they are getting old. Error404 does a kit to fit a much later gearbox. Worth considering as the box it allows you to fit is fairly easy to get hold of and inevitably have lower mileages on them...Last edited by steve briance; 29 April 2019, 18:27.Comment

Thanks to all for replying. After extensive research It would seem there are many different gearboxes that went under the quattro. After chatting online with Marcus from Audi Tradition. all depends on what engine the gearbox was married upto and what ratios were in the box when it was built and at what point in the year the car was built. after much head scratching and deliberation i have decided the way to go is keep my original gearbox have it rebuilt and put it back under, just need to find something to drive around in while thats being done. A place in Liverpool who specialize in Audi gearboxes do a total rebuild all bushes and bearings gearing and what ever needs repairing and or replacing including a complete new clutch for £1500 plus the vat. By the time i've sourced a gearbox had it rebuilt and fitted it i might as well go with option A as it doesnt cause me to get out and do it myself and it comes with an 18month guarantee.

I swapped boxes out years ago with a different 'code', and was fine, I checked with the local box reconditioners and the only difference they could see between codes was fifth gear being a little higher, which I wasn't going to complain about.
If you look at your sticker in the boot/handbook, it will tell you what code box you have, you could then look for that exactly. Mine is a CQ20V and had originally an AXM, I have no idea what it is now
