    Hi QE,

There may be a couple of alternatives here, I assume you're talking about the subject item on the front struts, correct sir? For everyone's possible benefit, a small review follows.

The originals were plastic, they eventually harden, crack and fall off. Newer owners may have never seen these items, not notice their absence, nor know what they are to do. The "cupped-washer's" job is to hold the struts from falling out of the fender turret (and here's the key), only when the car's weight is off the wheels. The subject black rings keep the otherwise naked cupped-washers from banging on the fender's turret-tops and scraping when they rotate with steering.

The space under the cupped-washers is a.) on strictly front struts, absolutely necessary for steering as the struts and hence the cupped-washers must rotate, and b.) in the case of top-mounts that have not been reinforced, indicative of how deflated / worn-out / less capable of absorbing the next impact, they have become. Reinforced, top-mounts cease to deflate etc., and this clearance distance remains constant.

There is a fellow making replacement plastic rings for the OEM steel cupped-washers here:

    https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/4399...6%3A4399495259

Unfortunately, there is also someone making and selling items to fill and eliminate the gap under the cupped-washers, as if that works on a B2, 3, or 4 type Audi. At best, this is misguided, and reflects a basic misunderstanding of how our particular front axle top-mounts function.

Alternatively, (and much cheaper, as these may be obtained used, for pennies at the wreckers), one could employ the VW alloy cupped washers in place of the steel originals. However as these items are of slightly larger OD and (10mm) taller than the steel OEMs, the black plastic dust covers (item 35 in the drwg. above) won't then fit. That may not be an issue. Theoretically, seriously neglected unreinforced top-mounts may then cause these taller items to be driven up into the underside of one's hood. That possibility (amongst other benefits) is eliminated when the top-mounts are reinforced. The VW alloy cupped-washers (P/N: 1J0 412 319 C) photo:

No. You have misunderstood. Look at the drawing in Post #1. Its the inverted cupped washer that the bump stop sits up into!
