I have the Voegelin and Hammill books from that list, I would go for the Hammill one. The one with the blue engine on the front is the updated/revised version I think.
They are good for general assembly practices, I would still use the workshop manual and info on here as well.Current-2004 Impreza PPP wagon

This is also a very good book concentrating on design and principles of new generation engines.
Well it was new when i got mine back in 1988,it's still very relevant to us guys though.

I dare say it but I5 engines and VAG quality in general are superior and most of the good stuff is done a factory so you need to be very careful at modifying with any benefit any part of a 20vt up to 400+ hp. From there on you need to have good experience with specific engine and good knowledge of gaining performance by modifying/replacing various parts.
