Any plastics / moulding experts here ?

Just an open invite here to anyone in the plastics / moulding industry who might be able to get some unavailable oddball (but important) component copied. Or maybe you have friends, family or business contacts in that area ?

Please send me a PM. I'll divulge more details on this at the right time - no point making a fuss until then and getting peoples hopes up for something.

Requirement is for a small plastic part that I think can be copied from an original part. Expect quantity to be about 50-100 pairs. Dunno the exact material - prolly needs a plastic expert to decide that.

    mmmm, intriguing. :mischeif:

Without prying, a couple of quick Qs:

    1. Will it give our cars 500hp for 20 quid?

    2. will us UrS4/6 misfits have a use for these too?

Car still pulling like a train BTW. Cheers Paul.

Paul, There is a company called Inject Plastics http://www.injectplastics.co.uk/ about 5 minutes from me. i have done some work for them in the past via an agency, at the time they were also dealing with small projects. Although it was only ever more than 100,000 units they might also do very small projects. If you PM me some details i can go and find out if they would be interested.

(most there stuff is frames for TVs)

Small plastic components are normally injection moulded due to fine detail and small radii. Injection moulding normally requires a steel mould (die) to be machined and finished (sometimes by hand). This is where the cost lies. The plastic and the cost of the production run would be relatively cheap.
If the item is simple (e.g. a flat piece of plastic with two grooves in it and a threaded hole) then the item could be machined from solid making it much cheaper to produce.

We make injection moulded boxes at our factory in South Africa. When I recently asked for a quote to make a new tool for a relatively small box. But with a couple of little intricacies in it the quote came back at the the best part of £18,500 but then the cost of the actual box, produced by this tool was in the region of about 10p.

your best bet is to probably find someone that makes a compatible box already rather than trying to get a new box made from scratch

Depending what you need I can ask my old boss as I trained up in injection moulding and he now works for a company in enfield who make all the parts for honda's and aston martins. As most people on here have mentioned the cost of the tool normally out wieghs the benifit of having it done unfortunately and there is alot of time needed to make a new tool using cnc's etc running the channels for the material.

Depending how hard you want the part normal polyprop should do it or if you want tougher go for abs (acrilyicbutanestyrene) which is very strong and on the plus side when moulded smells really sweet

hmmm, have to disagree - co polymer polyprop is much togher than abs..

being on the subject of plastics, ever think of making the inner plastic pillars(trims) for the coupe-avant which have become absolete?everytime the roof needs a retrim, one brakes and you have no replacement parts anymore...

Wow - lots of leads here. Thanks folks. I've chased two folk already and will get down the list for others. Need to get my hands on the original part first... Or mock one up to get a quote at least.

                      paul,
if this proves a worthwhile idea, please ask someone at the shop about the pillars.I have an avant set hanging(bought for spare),which i could lend for replication requirements.
let me know if this is possible
                      cheers

we have a couple companys for Injection Moulding arround... Send me your file and i can get a Quote.

if you or anybody else want just Prototypes from ABS Plastik, then i can help you.

I do have a Dimension 3d Printer in my Shop, that means i am able to Print 3d Prototypes from ABS Plastik out of a 3d CAD file. I am also able to Scan Parts with a 3d Laser Scanner.

Hmmmm... we've recently had a 3D printer installed in the office here (good quality ABS prototypes). Some wag commented that I'd be doing Audi parts at the weekend. Me? Hey - I'd have done a few for you, but not hundreds.

It'll not be cheap whichever route you go down. Investment casting is prob your best bet.. or if the profile allows, then extrusions as has been pointed out.

                            what about vac-forming?
All you need is a block of wood with the shape you require chiseled out, some air holes and a hoover - basic, but works.
