  • Homefries + insurance

I'm just phoning around getting some quotes as it's that time of year again (just after Christmas - perfect!).

As I'm planning on being Homefried shortly after the new year I'm going to ask to be quoted with the Homefries on so there's no nasty surprise when I do get it done and then tell the insurer..

For those that are Homefried, what have you told your insurers? Is it a "re-chip" or remap? What power increase have you quoted?

    Cheers

I declared all the mods on my S2 and it didn't increase the premium - it just depends on your insurer. If they say it will, change insurers, simple as that!

I am sure its something you can get away with as the ECU would have to be read by a expert to conclude that the original map was altered to give you more ponies. I think they worry to much about alloys and big bore exhausts.

Yeah - it would take a VERY picky insurance man to go looking at binary contents to establish if the ECU was as it left the factory or not.

IF anyone uses VAG-COM to look at the ECU - its very much the norm to see things like MTM, MRC, AMD and such in modified chipsets... But not in my homefries - they are somewhat more stealthy than that

Yes, but what did you tell the insurer?

As Homefries isn't a commercial product and there are no official claimed gains etc, I don't know what to tell them, regardless of what it may cost to cover it

When my then insurer asked, the options were "ECU upgrade", with then a list of % power increases over stock. I said my then MTM chip was a 25% increase. I also at the time declared the suspension mods, the alloys, the brakes and the exhaust.
