  • Vag-com

My wife's polo developed a fault with engine check displaying on the dash, vw dealer wants £100 just to have it plugged in. The idea is to sours vag-com with all the bits for descent money so it can be used for other cars if needed :mischeif: .
Is this the best place to get it?

Would processional kit be good enough?

If you want my advice.... Download the trial software from ross-tech and use an elcheapo ebay lead for it. You only need pay to register full version of vag-com - you can pull codes for free as long as you have an adapter cable.

A suggestion to all, not just Robo.
If you can't be bothered sourcing a laptop (if you don't already have one) and a hit and miss ebay lead that is usually a faff around as most lappy's these days don't have the old and more easily configured serial ports (usb+ebay leads = PITA sometimes) then try one of these >>> HERE.

Great little scanners, just plug in and they'll read engine, ABS (later S2's), air bag etc. 16pin OBD11 and also a supplied 2x2 lead as well. Also comes with a booklet to explain what the codes are (it shows VAG type 5 digit)
No facility to run output tests or datalog as you get with vag-com, but they are small enough to carry in the glove box or boot without worrying about some scum nicking your laptop.
I've got full vag-com, but one of these stays in the car, the laptop stays at home.

        Just a bit of info.

That is a brilliant suggestion, JasIIn
I searched around a bit and found this one as well:
          http://cgi.ebay.com/OBD2-OBDII-Auto-...hippingPayment
Approx 12 quid including shipping, so even less costly, but more important, quite a bit smaller in size than the other one. Just ordered one. Does not include the the 2x2 adapter needed for pre 96 cars, but those of us that already have VAG-COM already have those, and those who don't can pick them up for a few quid off Ebay.
Great to have a code scanner in the in-car toolkit
